For what reasons might a doctor prescribe niaspan ER and Lipitor (atorvastatin) to reduce cholesterol?

For what reasons might a doctor prescribe niaspan ER and Lipitor (atorvastatin) to reduce cholesterol?

Combo: Lipitor (atorvastatin) is a statin, and is very good at lowering your ldl, commonly referred to as "bad cholesterol". Niaspan is a slow release form of niacin, vitamin b3, which is more helpful in lowering triglycerides and raising HDL (good cholesterol). Some people need more than one agent to get their lipid panel in optimal range.

What's the difference between atorvastatin vs simvastatin?

What's the difference between atorvastatin vs simvastatin?

Lipitor (atorvastatin) v Zocor: Both are effective "statins" to lower cholesterol. Atorvastatin is more effective and less toxic than simvastatin, but neither is as effective as Crestor (rosuvastatin). For 95 % of people, with proper diet/exercise neither is necessary to reach a nonhdl cholesterol of 90 (subtract good = HDL fom total cholesterol = non hdl) = where coronary artery disease ceases. Side effect atorvastatin fenofibrate combination on kidney?

Side effect atorvastatin fenofibrate combination on kidney?

Hi: The two together can cause serious muscle damage and must be tightly controlled by your doctor. I suggest you take 300 mg of coenzyme q10. Once you have high blood pressure and if your CPK goes high then your kidneys can be subsequently affected. Keep well hydrated.

My dr is d/c atorvastatin as it maybe causing my severe achiness. How long will it take for med to get out of my system?

Longest: 4 days: The half-life of Atorvastatin is 20-30 hours, so it takes about 4 days for your body to flush out the medicine. If your muscles are inflamed, it make take longer for the achiness to go away. Some folks have felt better after they've taken coenzyme q10 [but it's pricy]. Taking coenzyme q10 while you are taking a statin may help prevent muscle aches in the first place. Good luck.

Is it true that the combination of fenofibrate and atorvastatin causes hepatitis?

Is it true that the combination of fenofibrate and atorvastatin causes hepatitis?

Not usually: Gemfibrizol is a fibrate that was used commonly to lower triglycerides, but inhibits the metabolism of statins thus causing higher concentrations of statins. This combination has been reported to increase chance of statin muscle damage. Fenofibrate does not have this effect on statin metabolism.
