Dr told me to use .5 mg of ativan (lorazepam) for insomnia, but to prevent addiction or need for higher dose, take sun thru thurs & not on fri. And sat. ?

For awhile maybe: Then the psychological dependency may also begin , i.e. , if you have a couple of poor nights sleep on the Ativan (lorazepam) nights and perhaps some struggling more than normal on the off nights, you may find yourself taking an extra dose on your medication nights or perhaps a dose on your off nights. At the end of the day, it's a temporary solution to a longer term problem, even taking it prn. ...Read more

Can taking .5mg of ativan (lorazepam) @ bedtime for 1.5 weeks cause anxiety/withdrawl symptoms when stopped. Prior addiction issues. Uncontrolled anxiety issues.

Yes, but this is: not the usual case. Benzo addiction usually takes two weeks or longer of continuous use, and even then, many patients do not suffer withdrawal symptoms, especially rebounding. Sensitive people can develop tolerance and/or dependence sooner, but I'm not sure if a history of addiction is predictive. Visit your prescribing MD for a less abrupt withdrawal protocol. ...Read more

Addiction: Yes. Addiction is about the disease in the brain, not necessarily about the drug. Addictive disease leads to despair, obsession, and death. Addiction is often a lonely existence, and often without joy or spirituality. Seek sobriety and serenity. ...Read more

What is more addictive, Xanax (alprazolam) or ativan?

Both: Both medications can be addictive. Xanax (alprazolam) acts quickly which is why it is desired by most people. Ativan acts relatively quickly as well but not as immediate as xanax (alprazolam). Both medications can be addicting and should only be taken as needed or as advised by your physician. ...Read more

If I'm prescribed Ativan (lorazepam) 0.5 bid prn for post partum anxiety how long can I take it before it's addictive? It's helpful but I'm concerned.

Post partum anxiety: Medications such as Ativan (lorazepam) are addictive in the sense that they are quickly adapted to, and to achieve the same effect, higher doses are required. The general post-partum anxiety is caused in part by sudden drops in estrogen, but unless you are nursing, your regular cycle should resume within 6-8 weeks after delivery. You should consult your healthcare provider to evaluate the need to continue. ...Read more
