Atenolol (Definition)

Atenolol is a relatively long-acting (24 hours) beta-blocker. Beta-blockers as a group of medications calm or slow the heart rate down. They stop the swings in hr from stress or nerves. If someone is on a good dose of a beta-blocker and are startled, the medication suppresses the pounding of your heart. It also won't allow the hr to climb with exercise. It's used to ...Read more

Metoprolol versus atenolol--what is the difference?

Metoprolol versus atenolol--what is the difference?

Half life: Atenolol has a shorter half life than metoprolol, only about 12 hours. Metoprolol can be taken once daily where for full effectivness atenolol should be taken twice daily. People often forget the second dose of anything so in my mind a once a day drug is better. ...Read more

Was on lopressor which is best to go to atenolol or toprol (metoprolol). For hbp?

Probably neither: I am not a big fan of beta blockers for hypertension, but if you have no other choice, the better option would probably be toprol xl as atenolol is not a once a day drug. The carrier for your drug is likely what you're allergic to, not the drug itself, explaining the reason why you're allergic to metoprolol and not lopressor (metoprolol tartrate). ...Read more

Due to unavaiaility of metoprolol+amlodipine 25/2.5 shifted to atenolol+nifedipine 50/20. Is it ok?

BP meds: It all depends on how the new drugs control your blood pressure. And also how the old drugs were doing. You need to keep a diary of pressures at various times during the day for about a week to make sure. And if you didn't do this while on the old meds, you have no idea how they were doing. Good luck. ...Read more

My dr has replaced the atenolol 25 mg once a day at night (not available) to the metoprolol tartrate to 25mg. Twice a day/ why the increase?

Not sure: Since metoprolol is the generic of Atenolol, and should be equivalent, I am not sure why your doctor increase the number of pills from one a day to two a day. I would suggest you talk to the physician who prescribed the medication to clarify the directions. I do not want you to develop side effects, so talk to you doctor. Good luck ...Read more

My blood pressure has been high taking 3 medications and walgreens pharma said I should not take metoprolol and atenolol together so I need to know?

Beta blockers: Both medicines are beta blockers which lower blood pressure and pulse. Usually taking an adequate dose of one or the other would be better than taking both. There can be other reasons for taking beta blockers; ask the prescribing physician before you change or stop any BP meds. Good luck! ...Read more

I just started metoprolol ER for PVCs, is it better than atenolol? My concern is my current usual hr is 80 bpm but my bp is 100-110/65 will it lower?

Atenolol vs Metoprol: Metoprolol may be better but the real question is what are the PVC's due to. Metoprolol in low doses probably won't lower your BP much but only time will tell. Start low and increase slowly. See if it reduces pvc frequency. ...Read more

PVC's: You could try magnesium for the PVC's or increasing your water intake and exercise to try and decrease the PVC's. Any of the beta blockers can cause weight gain, so try to use lower doses. ...Read more

Took 50mg Toprol (metoprolol) XL as doctor made me switch from atenolol. I didn't feel this med working until about 7 hours later and there on. Doctor says its ok?

Atenolol/Toprol XL: Atenolol had faster onset of action than Toprol (metoprolol) XL and also eliminated faster than Toprol (metoprolol) XL from our body.
Toprol (metoprolol) XL had longer time to show effect (Longer onset of action) but also stay in system longer and that's why the frequency of taking Toprol (metoprolol) per day is less than atenolol ...Read more

Doctor is replacing my Atenlol 25 MG with Metoprolol 25 twice daily. I have read horror stories about abruptly stopping Atenolol. Should I be worried about abruptly stopping Atenolol even though it's being replaced with another beta blocker?

Doctor is replacing my Atenlol 25 MG with Metoprolol 25 twice daily. I have read horror stories about abruptly stopping Atenolol. Should I be worried about abruptly stopping Atenolol even though it's being replaced with another beta blocker?

No: No, I think because it IS within the same class of drugs that you don't need to be so concerned and your Dr is putting you on the same dosage strength as the atenolol so I think you chances of having these "horror story side effects" are very low. Best wishes to you. ...Read more

I was on Atenolol 50mg daily. Doctor switching me to Toprol (metoprolol) XL 25mg. Bad side effects with atenolol. Is this equivalent? What should I expect?

Resolution of sympto: STOP 2ND GUESSING EVERYTHING THAT UR DOCTOR DOES! I assume u explained what "bad side effect" atenolol was causing to ur doctor (there's no description here). I also assume the side effect was from low BP. Toprol (metoprolol) XL is a longer-acting pill (that's y "XL"). It's also @a lower equivalent dose. So it shdn't drop the BP as much, & lasts longer (wears off slower) so u shd be covered for the entire day. ...Read more

If Toprol (metoprolol) XL has half life of 3-7 hours like atenolol then why does doctor say Toprol (metoprolol) will stay in my bloodstream for 24 hours unlike atenolol?

Having on and off sharp chest pains. Just stopped col turkey on sotalol and metoprolol on friday and started atenolol. Should I be concerned?

Perhaps, check dose: When you had the medications stopped, I assume by a cardiologist or you pcp, you should have been told why. Maybe they felt you were overblocked. The medications that were stoppedn are non specific beta blockers whereas the new medication is more for the heart. It will slow the heart rate down and is used more specifically for that. Perhaps you are underdosed. Call your pcp and find out. ...Read more

If I had an allergic reaction to Atenolol, what's the likelihood of having a reaction to Metoprolol tartrate? Also, how long before metoprolol works?

If I had an allergic reaction to Atenolol, what's the likelihood of having a reaction to Metoprolol tartrate? Also, how long before metoprolol works?

That depends: They are in the same class, so if you got tired for example, that is really a class effect, and some Beta Blockers (BB) may cause more lethargy than others, etc. If you were allergic to a component of the Atenolol, than another BB may be fine. Usually, you should see effects for BP and Heart rate lowering in a few days, some people even immediately. Best wishes. ...Read more

What are some good medications for palpitations from pvc's and pac's? Took metoprolol but gained weight, just started atenolol. Don't wanna gain more

Give it a try: If you do gain weight then consider other options. It is not that common to gain weight on beta blockers and can usually be avoided if you watch your food intake. If your irregular heartbeat is so bothersome that you take medication you may want to consider ablation. It is ussually such a benign condition that no medications are necessary. Make sure it is not your anxiety that you are treating ...Read more

Due to unavaibility of metoprolol +amlodipine 25/2.5 in mauritania, I changed to atenolol+nifedipine. 50/20. Is it ok?

Somewhat comparable: Same drug classes at comparable doses.
Both atenolol and metoprolol are selective beta-1 blockers with similar effectiveness for BP control & prevention of cardiac events.
For calcium channel blockers, amlodipine is usually longer acting, but there are long-acting forms of nifedipine.
Your md made choice for a reason. No guarantee new combo will work as well, but it might even work better for you. ...Read more
