Itching, anxiety: Atarax (hydroxyzine, also sold as vistiril) is a sedating antihistamine. In addition to relieving anxiety, it can also help allergic itching, nausea, & motion sickness. It is non-addictive but can cause drowsiness & other (mostly minor) side-effects. See: http://www.Ncbi.Nlm.Nih.Gov/pubmedhealth/pmh0000796/. ...Read more
Good sleep practices: Atarax/hydroxyzine is a prescription antihistamine/anti-allergy medication. Because it can be sedating, some people find it helpful for insomnia, at least in the short term. It is not a controlled or addictive medication like some sleep aids. Be sure to practice sleep hygiene -- structuring your sleep, avoid lying long periods not sleeping, avoid daytime napping, use bed only for sleep/intimacy. ...Read more
Not the only one: There are a number of antihistamines that have also been helpful in treating acute anxiety. It would be best to discuss these options with your psychiatrist to find the right medication choice for you, as the sedation that often occurs with antihistamines can be quite hindering. ...Read more
Benzos: Atarax is an antihistamine, not my first choice for anxiety, it will make you tired though. Xanax is a benzodiazepine, which is effective for a panic attack, but long term use can lead to dependence/tolerance and possible abuse, while not effectively treating the underlying anxiety disorder. SSRIs like paxil (paroxetine) and zoloft are much better for long term treatment of anxiety, as well as psychotherapy. ...Read more
Alcohol and sedative: I would wait 24 hours to be completely safe since xanax (alprazolam) can be deadly if mixed with or without alcohol. Atarax is a very sedating antihistamine which can have very serious reactions as well. You really should ask your pharmacist as well as your primary doctor who prescribed since doses also make a difference. ...Read more

Claritin (loratadine) Not Atarax: You may combine nyquil & claritin (loratadine). The latter is a non-sedating antihistamine. Nyquil contains a sedating antihistamine & Atarax is another. Liquid formulations of nyquil contain a lot of alcohol. So if a drunken stupor is your goal you'll achieve it with nyquil & atarax. There are better & safer ways to treat your allergies. Skin testing is more cost-effective than immunocap & equally accurate. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
It depends: Atarax is a short acting anti-histamine or anti-itch medication. It also makes you drowsy. How long does your skin rashes last depending on what type of skin rashes that is and what specific treatment for that rashes. It would work well for hives although a longer acting anti-histamine like Allegra / Claritin (loratadine) / zyrtec is preferable. If it lasts more than 6 weeks, you should go see an allergist. ...Read more
What's gonna happen if i took 350mg of atarax, (hydroxyzine) 4 pentalgines, 7 diuretics and some coffiene?
What to do if I have been prescribed alprazolam and atarax (hydroxyzine). is it ok to get out of bed before I wake up naturally?
Don't understand ?: Xanax (alprazolam) is a very short acting drug, and if you are taking it at night, it likely would be at very low levels by morning. Atarax is a somewhat sedating antihistamine, but if you are taking that at night, there is not much likelihood of morning residual effects. If it is bothering you, I would talk with your doctor about reducing the dose. Don't know what you mean by 'naturally? - not using alarm? ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
My 9 year old was prescribed atarax (hydroxyzine) 25mg to help her sleep at night. Can anyone tell me more about this medication?
What exactly causes the weight gain when taking atarax (hydroxyzine)? How does it happen? What can be done to eliminate it the weight gain?
Atarax (hydroxyzine): Since it is a centrally acting antihistamine with sedation properties, it tends to be the slight slowing down of metabolism at nighttime (when metabolism tends to pick up) as well as Atarax (hydroxyzine) does tend to cause some nocturnal eating, which also contributes. ...Read more
Hi. I was prescribed atarax (hydroxyzine) for anxiety. About an hour after taking it my hr shot to 104bpm. I guess it did the opposite? Dont take again correct?
Probably ok: 104 is slightly fast, but not very. Our hearts often normally reach such a rate temporarily during the day. Typically hydroxyzine doesn't cause an increase in heart rate. But it is not a very powerful medicine for anxiety. IF you had anxiety at the time of the 104 heart rate, it just may not have been working very well. Perhaps some reassurance that a temporary hr of 104 is not serious? ...Read more
Depends: Some people get drowsy with just 10 mg , others can take 100 mg without any drowsiness. The drowsiness effect tends to decline after a few days. I think Zyrtec is a better option because it is just as effective and the drowsy effect is at least 80% less than Atarax (hydroxyzine). ...Read more
