At What Age Can Babies Take Miralax
At what age can a baby take miralax (polyethylene glycol)? My pediatrician old me it is safe to give my 10 month old benefiber, but it is still not doing the trick.
I Rx it that young: I often use full strength apple or prune juice (not diluted baby juice)in infants. It takes 2-4 days but in volumes of 1-2 oz /1-3xday it helps some. The mirilax was a prescription med before years of safe use let it come to the otc market. The pedi gi's in my neighborhood started using it >a decade ago in infants & I occasionally do. Start with teaspoon & increase as needed to get to soft stools. ...Read more

I recommend 2.5-5 ml: But this depends a little on the size of your baby. Preschool children easily tolerate 1 cap full, which is 17 grams (about a tablespoon or 15ml). If dose is not effective in 8-12 hours, a repeat dose may be given until stool is soft. Too large a dose will cause diarrhea and can potentially cause dehydration, so be sure to offer fluids. ...Read more
Dose-dependent drug: Doctors define constipation as stools less frequently than once every 3-4 days. Patients feel they are "constipated" when passing hard or small volume stool, or they feel full & bloated. We can't tell from your question if this is a one-time problem or a recurrent and progressive one. Also, we don't know if you're blocked, if your gut is sluggish, or your rectum works correctly. Consult your doc. ...Read more

If laxative has not worked, you may try Fleet's enema. The medication is available over the counter at drug stores. Drink enough water so that your urine is mostly colorless and increase your intake of fiber by taking Metamucil or fiber foods. Consult this site for fiber foods.

Depends on reason: No universal answer to this. Chronic constipation can have many causes such as side effect of meds, metabolic disease (eg. Diabetes, hypothyroidism), neurologic disease, low fiber diet, obstruction from colon polyps/colon cancer. This is why over-the-counter laxatives should not be used long-term for symptoms of unknown reason; getting to the root of the problem is highly advisable. ...Read more
Yes its okay: Miralax (polyethylene glycol) is a gentle laxative. Metamucil is a fiber supplement, and not really a laxative.
