Tia (transitory ischemic attack) happens when blood supply to a certain area of the brain gets cut off temporarily. This causes a neurologic deficit - weakness, numbness, visual deficit or difficulty with speech. While TIA usually resolves, it indicates that there is a problem with your heart or blood vessels that can cause ...Read more

I had an episode where my tongue felt heavy and paralized briefly. Then a hot tingling through body. Does this sound like a mini stroke (?

Neurology consult: I'm not sure about the hot tingling sensation, but a heavy, paralyzed tongue that stays that way can be bulbar ALS, a very serious condition. Better see a neurologist, even though you are young and don't smoke. Anxiety can cause some really strange symptoms, as can electrolyte imbalances and vitamin deficiencies, but difficult to tell in this venue. MS is another concern. ...Read more

Did I have a mini-stroke? I am a 25 year old female. I had an experience last night that scared me. I was just walking along in my house and got a sudden, intense headache. The headache felt worse when i moved my head, with pain kind of rushing to whateve

Most : Most often, severe, throbbing, pressurelike headaches, with nausea or vomiting, and with sensitivity to light or sound or noise are migraines. Sometimes migraines follow a period of aura consisting of vision changes, numbness or weakness. Sometimes the aura continues after the headache stops, but migraine aura should really be gone when the headache has gone away. Migraine headaches can be diagnosed when there is a pattern of these sorts of headaches. Some headaches feel like migraine, but they are symptoms of an underlying, serious problem. Problems that can cause headaches that feel like migraine include subarachnoid hemorrhage, aneurysms, infections, and others. New headaches, headaches that aren't like those that have been experienced in the past, headaches that go from 0 to terrible over a few seconds, and headaches associated with neurological symptoms such as numbness are all reasonable reasons to see a doctor promptly. ...Read more

Diplopia:-mri brain isch chngs & infarcts. Now thirsty esp at night & constant salty taste in mouth. Could mini stroke be cause or what else?

Yes, no, maybe so: "mri brain isch chngs & infarcts" isn't specific enough. The isch chngs & infarcts can't be just anywhere. Diplopia from strokes tends to improve at least partly; is yours? As for thirsty esp at night & constant salty taste in mouth: Strokes don't cause that. My guess is it's a med side effect, maybe the bisoprolol. Avoid "ministroke"; the term is so poorly defined it's essentially meaningless. ...Read more

What is a mini stroke? Does it mean that something is wrong with the heart?

Possibly: Mini-strokes are colloquially thought of as transient ischemic attacks, or tias, which are neurologic deficits that may resolve over a relatively short period of time. Although these are commonly associated with disease of the blood vessels feeding parts of the brain, some may be a result of clots forming in the heart, e.g., sluggish contraction with blood sludging or atrial fibrillation. ...Read more

What's the difference between a mini-stroke and an epilepsy? Which is more serious?

Different causes: Epilepsy or seizures, occur when something interrupts the electrical messages in the brain and it is usually chronic. Isolated seizures do not usually cause death or a stroke by themselves. There is medication that can control most seizures.
