There is also such a thing as a "chemical pregnancy" which is a miscarriage that happens so early, that there is never any visible gestational sac by ultrasound. Likely: Today's home preg tests can pick up very low levels of the preg hormone hcg. I consider those results reliable. If a result is questionable, repeating the test in a few days will be helpful. If there is some concern about the viability of a pregnancy then serial quantitative blood HCG levels would be helpful for diagnosis. ...Read more
