Asymptomatic Strep Throat
Confusing question: I know of no "chronic strep condition" that affects kids. A kid or adult can be an asymptomatic carrier of strep for their lifetime, and have few if any consequences. A real problem exists when these "carriers" come in with mono or other non strep infection and only a strep test is run, because it will be positive.Blood tests can verify a sore throat was really strep, but these are rarely done. ...Read more
No: Most streptococcus pyogenes (group a streptococcus) pharyngitis will resolve in 7 days even without treatment. Unfortunately there is then the risk of glomerulonephritis and rheumatic fever. An asymptomatic streptococcal carrier state is not uncommon in children and young adults especially in close quarters like barracks. Relapses of strep pharyngitis rather than chronic infection are common. ...Read more
A lifetime: There are some people that can carry strep & never get infected , ever.Who & why is not easy to study. The average carry rate by asymptomatic people has been quoted as 5% in the summer and upwards of 25% during the winter. Some of these carriers are likely treated for strep when they have simple viruses that cause symptoms as only blood testing could confirm a true infection. ...Read more
Antibiotic: If the throat culture is positive for streptococcus and it is considered the cause of your painful throat, then an appropriate oral antibiotic should relieve your symptoms promptly. Remember, there are carriers of this bacteria who are asymptomatic. Therefore, the doctor must know that this is the causative organism. If it is, then oral antibiotics are the treatment of choice. ...Read more
Several possibities: You were re-exposed and reinfected ( using the same toothbrush or kissing your asymptomatic partner can do this). You can also have another issue at the same time.Mono and strep can occur concurrently. Some people reinfect so easily that a 2 step treatment protocol using a penicillin drug followed by Rifampin is occasionally used. ...Read more
I get strep throat often. I avoid sharing drink, utensils, ect with people which has helped alot, but still seem to catch it once in a while.?
HAND TO FACE TRANSFR: I know a psychologist who studied human behavior & found the average adult touched his/her face with unwashed hands 6x/hr & nose 2x/hr.Anytime we do so we can pass germs from what we touch to areas that allow germs access to the nose & mouth. You can do what you can to avoid it, but strep is carried by at least 5% of asymptomatic people continuously. ...Read more
I used to get strep throat a lot when i was growing up. Finally they removed my tonsils and i haven't had it since. How do I know if I am a carrier?
Testing: Strep carrier status occurs when an individual tests positive for the strep a germ on multiple occasions but remains asymptomatic. (lack of physical illness & lack of a blood test showing an immune response)an estimated 5% of folks are year round carriers & as many as 25% may be transient carriers in the winter.Carriers do pose some risk to susceptible friends & family. ...Read more
If my child and I got exposed to strep throat in the daycare, how likely are we to get it within a week?
Is it possible to be immune to strep throat? I have never had it (24yrs), nor have my siblings or parents ever had strep throat.
Maybe: There are many individuals who actually carry group a streptococcus in their nose & throat year round & may never experience a related illness. Why some become symptomatic within 24 hours of invasion & some never do is unknown. Asymptomatic carriers serve as a steady reservoir of infection to those who become sick with it. ...Read more
