Prednisone (Definition)

Prednisone is a synthetic cortisone. The body makes cortisone, a natural hormone made in adrenal glands. The body converts it to Hydrocortisone to become active. 25 mg of cortisone has about same effect as 5 mgm prednisone. The average person would produce 3-6 mg of pred daily. So why use a substitute? The synthetic has more anti-inflammatory effect; but has less effect ...Read more

Have pneumonia asthma bronchitis on prednisone 40mgx5 levoflaxcin500x7 is ok to take benedryl, cough supp and expectorant to manage severe coughing?

Probably OK but..: If your cough is caused by uncontrolled asthma, then you need to get the asthma under control instead of relying on cough medicine to relieve the symptoms. On the other hand, if your lung function is reasonably good and the cough is too bothersome, i see no harm in taking a cough suppressant for a few days. I would suggest that you talk to your doctor about these issues. ...Read more

Will using mucinex (guaifenesin) dm help with bronchitis and asthma was prescribe prednisone 20mg ariythomicin 250mg for 7 days om gor 4 daytake pro air and advair?

Doubtful: The "active" ingredient in Mucinex (guaifenesin) is guaiafenisin. It has been hawked by drug huxters as an expectorant for for over 50 years-- something wonderful for loosening up phlegm so you can cough it up from your congested lungs. When the AMA Drug Evaluations was published in 1980, pharm companies were aghast, because it evaluated which drugs worked best. This one was "at least as good as a placebo". ...Read more

4 day course of prednisone for asthma - 40 mg decreasing by 10 mg each day. Breastfeeding9 month old. Ok?

Prednisone: According to Toxnet/Lactmed very little of prednisone will end up in breastmilk. It is safe to take a short burst of prednisone while breastfeeding. There should be minimal impact of prednisone on breastmilk production. https://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/newtoxnet/lactmed.htm ...Read more

Prescribed prednisone for asthma/laryngitis. 4 day dose: 40mg on day 1, then 30, 20mg, and 10mg. I am very worried about side effects. Should I be?

Common dosing: Short term treatment with a tapering dose of an anti-inflammatory steroid is a common practice. Any med strong enough to do good could produce uncomfortable side effects. With this treatment, the more common side effect would be an increase in appetite or steroid "rage", where you get cranky, which all fades as the med stops. You must decide if the SE's are worse than the problem.I would ignore them ...Read more

33lady breastfeeding w/ asthma can I use prednisone?

Yes: If the asthma is bad enough, then yes, Prednisone can be used. There may be safer, less intense, alternatives like inhaled steroids, or bronchodilators, like albuterol (ventolin or proair), but there use really depends on the severity of the asthma attack. Your doctor will be able to tell you this. ...Read more

I'm one high dose prednisone for asthma flairup. I'm getting the rash from the high doses. It's happened before. What can I do for the rash?

Not much: Unfortunately, there is not much to do about a steroid-associated rash until you're able to get off of it. The best approach is to see an allergist to make sure you're doing everything possible to control the asthma to the point that you don't have to resort to oral steroids for exacerbations. ...Read more

Do you have your asthma meds (glucocorticoid & beta-2 agonist inhalers?). Talk to your doctor. It may be OK to either stop or lower the dose for the rest of the course of prednisone. Don't forget, the outcome is the same whether you kill yourself or die from asthma. Be safe. Good luc ...Read more

Should i take a water pill, after taking prednisone, for asthma flaring up, because its making me fat and puffy lookin, even though i already pee alot?

No: Prednisone often increases one's appetite and steers the body towards producing more fat. Although some may retain sodium (thus water) because of prednisone, this is not a major cause for your weight gain. Most people with asthma do not need Prednisone as a controller drug today. Suggest you consult an allergist. After you can get off of prednisone, you'll have a better chance to lose the weight. ...Read more
