Can asthma inhalers help non-asthmatics breath better by relaxing muscles?

Not a good idea: If your lungs are normal, they maintain the appropriate balance of keeping your small airways open/closed.The mechanism is designed to keep toxic fumes/materials out of sensitive endpoints in the lung. When used without need, they increase your hearts work /rate & saturate the lungs sensors.Overstimulation can make these sensors less reliable.Any med strong enough to do good can do the opposite ...Read more

If your difficulty breathing responds to asthma rescue inhalers, does that guarantee you don't have anxiety and you have a real lung disorder instead?

If your difficulty breathing responds to asthma rescue inhalers, does that guarantee you don't have anxiety and you have a real lung disorder instead?

Not necessarily: I see you have belching, reflux, and now have experienced improved breathing with a rescue inhaler. The improvement with a rescue inhaler indicates you have reversible airway reactivity. This is not a disease of the lungs but, rather, a tendency of the muscles of the airways leading to your lungs to go into a spasm and possibly have inflammation. This can be on an allergic bases as in traditional asthma. In your situation the reflux may be causing small amounts of acid to seep into the airways making them more reactive. Food allergies can trigger increased reflux by causing esophageal inflammation. Having airway reactivity can cause anxiety and having anxiety can worsen airway reactivity as well as increase the severity of reflux. You will need to have the reflux addressed, determine if you have a problem with the ability of food to stay in your stomach and not come back up, see if your belching could be due to Helicobacter Pylori, for example, an infection that can be treated, and determine of you have chronic inflammation in your airways needing treatment. ...Read more

At times, have shallow breathing w/numbness/tingling all over and mental confusion;sometimes w/chest pain..No anxiety/food allergy/asthma. Any ideas?

Could be anxiety: These symptoms could easily be explained by limited symptom panic attacks, but you need a full evaluation with your physician to rule out other possible causes. Could also be from various types of substance use (you additionally list "type a medication" in your info, but i don't know what that is.) with the "irrational rage" and memory loss, would also recommend evaluation with a psychiatrist. ...Read more

Go back on it: Unless you have mostly avoided the allergen triggers or the asthma was triggered by a viral infection, the recurrence of asthma should be expected once off of a controller drug.- think of it as insulin for diabetes. If you want to reduce the drug intake, consider an allergy consult: to identify the triggers and perhaps a course of allergy shots to modify the disease in a long term basis. ...Read more
