An asthma inhaler is a devise that delivers asthma medication through inhalation. They are sometimes called puffers or mdi's (metered dose inhalers) they can deliver rescue medications such as albuterol, or controller medications such as inhaled steroids.

Why do doctors have a hard time prescribing me xopenex (levalbuterol) hfa(an asthma inhaler)? Some does not even know what it is.

Not sure...: Some insurance companies have this inhaler on formulary and others don't. If your doctor has not heard of this inhaler, he/she can look if up so it is not clear to me why they would not prescribe it. In some patients, it causes less of an increase in heart rate so it is sometimes better tolerated. Your doc could get more info from your pharmacist if needed as well. ...Read more

Yes, very common: Asthma is treated in a step wise fashion. If the rescue inhaler isn't working well to control your symptoms, then an inhaled steroid would be prescribed, then an inhaled steroid/LABA like advair. Once controlled well, you might be able to de-escalate therapy. I would discuss this with your pulmonologist. ...Read more
