Cough (Definition)

The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

How can you tell the difference between an asthma cough and a cough due to environment like mold or dust?

For asthma cough, how effective is Floven inhaler 250mcg 1 inhale twice a day?

It prevents flareups: Flovent is a 'preventer' medicine -- it will help prevent asthma flareups but isn't as effective in helping if the flareup is already happening. If you're having asthma symptoms right now, please see the Dr. -- you need 'reliever' medicines like albuterol and maybe prednisone. ...Read more

Second opinion: Not sure why you would be intolerant of most inhailers. It's not that common. If you're intolerant to the powder used in inhailers, there are other formulations available that can deliver the same medications to your lungs such as nebulized medicines. Also, there are other methods of asthma treatment such as xolair which may be right for you. ...Read more

Dr jack mutnic can montelukast 10mg tablet, worsen an asthma cough. I get post nasal drip but its improved when not taking it?

Perhaps: If montelukast reduces your nasal congestion, it may open up your sinuses and thereby increases the post-nasal drips transiently. Another potential answer is that if montelukast reduces the airway obstruction, the mucus trapped in the airways below may start to move upstream and be coughed out. If it works as mentioned, then the cough should improve in less than 2 weeks. ...Read more

Slightly: There is a test called FeNO which is used in some Allergy offices. A positive test is a marker for activated eosinophils in the airway. Depending on the frequency and severity of your symptoms, an inhaled steroid may be indicated. ...Read more

Doctor can examine: An asthma patient may need more doses of asthma medication or a second medication, or just fine-tuning of her asthma meds. If the doctor feels there is bronchitis or pneumonia, an antibiotic may be needed. Sometimes a chest x-ray is done to see if there is something unusual going on, but a chest x-ray is usually not needed in simpler cases of asthma. ...Read more

I had a chest cold five weeks ago. I have asthma . Cough is worse, low fever and very painful under left breast coughing and at rest. Bronchitis?

Acute bronchitis...: You likely have acute bronchitis due to either a bacterial or viral infection. You also may be having some related bronchospasm contributing to the cough. See your doctor to determine the best treatment. If you are having increased shortness of breath, go to the er. If you smoke, you need to quit to decrease airway inflammation. ...Read more

Asthma-coughing fits between Nebulizer/albuterol treatments. Better to steam/cool mist? Foods/teas? Sit up, lay, walk? I cough until I gag/cry.

Asthma-coughing fits between Nebulizer/albuterol treatments. Better to steam/cool mist? Foods/teas? Sit up, lay, walk? I cough until I gag/cry.

See your doctor: Sounds like your asthma is may need a tune up. Go see your doctor, you likely need a steroid inhaler or possibly a combination inhaler with albuterol and a steroid to help calm things down. Moist air may help a bit (like the nebulizer) but sounds like you need more than that. Positioning your body, certain foods likely won't make a difference either. ...Read more

Is non-allergic rhinitis common in asthma? cough and mild wheezing are the only symptoms of asthma. No allergies- constant runny nose

All connected: In Chinese medicine, your lungs are connected to your entire respiratory system, including your lungs, your throat, your bronchial tubes, and your nose. So if your lungs are weak in something like asthma it would be likely that you'd also have a runny nose. It means that you need some strengthening of your lungs, and you should probably quit smoking. ...Read more

I want to control my asthma allergies cough cold ?

I want to control my asthma allergies cough cold ?

Vague question: Many of the issues triggering wheezing in a 1 yo are infectious and not true asthma. I rarely use the label at that age unless there is a strong family history of asthma and the kid has eczema or other associated problems. Control of any set of symptoms takes a good baseline history & evaluation followed by an individualized plan. This is best devised by the doc who knows the patient best. ...Read more

Is it ever that a 3.5 yr old with asthma take cough meds for his cold?

No: Cough medicine for youngsters may do more harm than good. First, make sure the asthma is under control else you end up getting into more trouble by suppressing the cough. During a cold, your doctor may even prescribe a short-course of oral cortisone to get the child out of asthma. Honey may work for cough some times but you need to know the cause for the cough first. ...Read more
