During an asthma exacerbation, if your oxygen level drops, you need to be evaluated in an er because this is a sign of a life-threatening episode that may need more than supplemental oxygen to treat. Asthma attack led to ER visit. Given breathing treatment and two steroids. Medrol (methylprednisolone) pack for home. My heart rate is 100, is that ok?

No: Although high-dose Medrol can increase your heart rate, use of bronchodilator or uncontrolled asthma may be another cause. I noted that you are on Toprol (metoprolol) which may render your asthma more difficult to control and you should discuss this with your doctor preferably a B/C allergist. ...Read more

Which step in asthma management would a home nebuliser be used?

Rarely: Nebulizers allow you to take albuterol aerosolized rather than through an inhaler device. For adults, there is really no benefit to this except maybe cost. There are some other nebulized meds, but they typically have to be used more often than the meds available via other inhaler devices. They are best for children or sick elderly who can't use a more-complicated inhaler. ...Read more

My husband has asthma & he doesn't have insurance. His rescue inhalers are expensive. Are there any home remedies or tricks to calm an asthma attack?

Environment & meds: W/o testing, it's hard to give specific avoidance measures. If there's passive/ active smoking, this must be stopped. Eliminating areas of h20 damage, feather pillows/comforters, replacing old pillows, replacing what can't be hot h20 washed, etc. Spending money on a prescription low dose inhaled corticosteroid used regularly can pay for itself with decreased albuterol/er use. Can i get an anxiety, panic attacks and asthma from gastroesophageal reflux disease?

Can i get an anxiety, panic attacks and asthma from gastroesophageal reflux disease?

Panic ; Anxiety: I agree with dr. Burns that asthma can certainly develop secondary to gerd. However, physical sensations can be especially alarming to people who are prone to anxiety. This does not mean that gerd "causes" the anxiety or panic attacks -- your system is just extremely fine-tuned to physical sensation. This triggers your oversensitive system to react with anxiety. Cbt can help anxiety a lot! ...Read more
