Is laryngospasm a symptom of asthma or of anaphylaxis?

Is laryngospasm a symptom of asthma or of anaphylaxis?

Neither: Thiis is a reflex that occurs occasionally after surgery due to irritation of the larynx. It causes "roaring disease"in horses when they eat a plant that contains an enzyme that destroys vitamin b1. It is beause of an irritability of the recurrent laryngeal nerve that innervates the cords. Get rid of all sugar "junk" and try taking b1. See a nutritionist for details and look it up in wikipedia. ...Read more

How can I tell whether my 10 yo is having an asthma attack or anaphylaxis? Thanks!

How can I tell whether my 10 yo is having an asthma attack or anaphylaxis? Thanks!

Can be tough : Asthma is a condition that is confined to the lungs; anaphylaxis is an allergic reaction that can involve the lungs (wheeze or cough), a closing up of the throat, swelling of the lips, and vomiting, to name a few. Either condition is serious. Do not hesitate to call 911 if you are unable to tell if your son is having an asthma attack versus anaphylaxis. Always "err" on the side of safety. ...Read more

Got asthma would premedicating prevent anaphylaxis shock from the dye on CT angiogram.

Got asthma would premedicating prevent anaphylaxis shock from the dye on CT angiogram.

Rare: You have no history of contrast allergy so there is no clear cut indication for premedication. However, your history of asthma and anxiety about the procedure may increase your susceptibility and should be addressed. It is reasonable to ask your doctor for a mild sedative like valium before the test. No harm in premedication steroid/benadryl if your doctor prescribes it too. Risk remains small. ...Read more

I have takenAdvil many times before, can I get Anaphylaxis from it? I also have Asthma. I have a bad headache right now.

Advil (ibuprofen): If so far you had no reaction from , unlikely you will react later, few do, but one can't tell who will, better be cautious though with all NSAIDs and aspirin, if you have asthma, some asthmatics do react and get asthma flare ups when exposed to NSAIDs, try acetaminophen instead, you need to be evaluated though for the cause of your headaches, could be your sinuses, see an allergist, good luck ...Read more

Is it possible to have normal o2 sats during an asthma attack? What do o2 sats look like during anaphylaxis? What could wheezing w/normal o2 sats be?

Is it possible to have normal o2 sats during an asthma attack? What do o2 sats look like during anaphylaxis? What could wheezing w/normal o2 sats be?

One at a time please: Yes, it's possible to have normal o2 sats during a mild asthma attack. The o2 sats during an anaphylactic reaction will get worse as the reaction progresses, unless it's stopped by appropriate medical care. Wheezing with normal o2 sats happens when for many reasons: could be mild bronchiolitis/bronchitis, mild asthma, a foreign body in the airway, could be something else mistaken for wheezing. ...Read more

22yo f, ciu, asthma, had hives after taking meds prescribed. Also chills and coughing. Took puffer, but hives still there, cough gone. Anaphylaxis?

Hard to say: From your information, the issues are not clear. Hives are relatively common and but whether they are related to anaphylaxis or not is often hard to sort out.If your asthma flared and the hives appeared at the same time, they may be connected and you should consult the treating doc immediately. ...Read more

I had respiratory failure (cyanosis) during general anaesthetic. The doctor thinks it was anaphylaxis. I am now diagnosed with both COPD stage 2 and asthma. Were these conditions the more likely cause?

I had respiratory failure (cyanosis) during general anaesthetic. The doctor thinks it was anaphylaxis. I am now diagnosed with both COPD stage 2 and asthma. Were these conditions the more likely cause?

COPD is deadly: Anaphylaxis can happen with any drug, but acute postoperative respiratory failure is more commonly caused by underlying lung disease. Stopping smoking several weeks before surgery decreases risk for complications. Of course, the best thing anyone can do for better health is to stop smoking, especially those with lung disease. Smoking with lung disease is like rubbing dirt into a wound. Stop ASAP. ...Read more

I have severe shellfish allergy. I never had Anaphylaxis but I carry an EpiPen (epinephrine). Will an EpiPen (epinephrine) reverse throat swelling? I have Asthma as well.

Yes it would: Epipen (epinephrine) would help open the blocked airway, that's what it's meant for besides dilating the air passages in the lungs and elevating the blood pressure in case of anaphylaxis ...Read more

I suffered what doctors thought was an anaphylactic shock during general anaesthetic a few months ago.I am now diagnosed with both COPD stage 2 and asthma. Were these conditions the more likely cause?

Not likely: The COPD is not likely related to the anaphylaxis. The asthma may be a sign that you are more "atopic" or allergic. As there are many with asthma that have "hyperactive" immune systems that "react" to many different allergens more strongly than others. But overall it's more likely the anaphylaxis and asthma are unrelated. Hope this helps. ...Read more
