My newborn son had meconium aspiration pneumonia and chest x-rays twice daily for 1 week. Does the radiation increase his risk for cancer?

No: There was a media flap some years about after a laughably bad journal study claimed that thousands of people were dying each year from routine chest x-rays. The fallacy was assuming a linear risk where the curve is really sigmoidal or exponential. Junior is gravely sick, needs the x-rays in any case, and my hope is that he will pull through. I'm glad to offer some relief. Good luck and be strong. ...Read more

Why if there is suspicion for aspiration, send for expiratory film (chest x-ray)?

If you: Are referring to foreign body aspiration, an expiratory film may provide additional information, because if the aspirated object has occluded a bronchus, that lung or part of the lung will not "deflate" normally upon expiration. An inspiratory film will mask this potential finding. ...Read more

Dr said that my 4y/o daughter has walking pneumonia after seeing her chest X-ray and listening to her chest. Radiology rpt is negative. What is it?

Exam vs X-ray: A doctor can often hear a pneumonia on a child days before the x-ray will turn positive. S/he can also miss a pneumonia that shows up on x-ray if the common sounds are not audible. In kids, the x-rays will often remain positive for up to six weeks after the pneumonia has cleared with treatment. It is the combination of exam, lab and tests in the hands of a trained doc that comes up with answers. ...Read more

Certainly if you feel short of breath or are coughing, a repeat visit to the doctor is in order. ...Read more

Stick with 1 person: Sounds like you are shopping around for opinions. If you have chronic cough that is productive, there can be many causes. Working with one pulmonologist will help you get at the root of the problem. Asthma doesn't usually cause a productive cough, and most bronchitis is viral, so antibiotics won't work. Post nasal drip, allergies, chronic bronchitis, bronchiolitis, bronchiectasis, reflux, etc. ...Read more

Quality of life...: Sometime a feeding tube is used but with advanced dementia, feeding tube often causes more harm than good.
