If you can get one of these worms they are simple to identify, or a stool specimen will contain eggs. ...Read more
I have taken zentel 400 for 10 days for ascaris. I finished 4 days ago but symptoms still prevail. Any reason for this?
RE: Zentel: I would agree that a 10 day course of zentel is longer than usual, and should have treated the ascariasis. I would submit another stool specimen for bacterial culture, along with ova/parasite exam. I would strongly doubt ascariasis is an active problem at this time and attempt to exclude other problems. Gastrointestinal input with possible colonoscopy might be of benefit. Good luck. ...Read more

What is the best way to clear up and prevent the spread of ring worms in children? We are treating them with prescription cream but is there a oral medication a ten year old can take? She has multiple ringworms at this time.
Confirm and treat: Visit your doctor or get a infectious diseases referral. Ascaris is uncommon in the United States, but can occur in people traveling from an endemic region. Diagnosis is typically done by identifying ascaris eggs in a stool sample using a microscope. Treatment involves Albendazole or Mebendazole given over a span of 1 to 3 days. With treatment, expect the presence of dead roundworms on defecation. ...Read more

Recently completed medication for roundworm (ascariasis), when should we do tests to see the results of outcome by medication?
Likely no need.: Depending on the medication used, the roundworm numbers are decimated or completely removed. Even if there were a few left after therapy, you may likely be asymptomatic, as is, apparently, the case with slight infections. Mebendazole is given over 3 days (100 mg PO q 12h x 3 days), and many other meds, like Albendazole only need one dose (400 mg po). That seems to be all unless re-infected. ...Read more
