Plz can someone give me the name of one or a few great GI drs in the San Francisco area? Maybe at Stanford? Someone had to know something?
Referral needed: Your primary care doctor is the best source of information for local referrals, and if and when they're needed. GI specialists typically won't see new patients unless referred by a primary doctor or if there's a true emergency (and then only after being evaluated in the ER and/or as a hospital inpatient). ...Read more

I was told that RDL out of Ca. Is the gold standard lab for ANA profile. What are your thoughts on this?
That's news to me: And I'm a pathologist, a specialist in lab medicine. The ANA is NEVER more than just one small piece that a physician uses to make a diagnosis. One older woman out of four has a positive ANA despite being perfectly healthy. This is a hard concept to get people to understand, but it's the truth. ...Read more
Can drinking around 15 standard drinks 1-2 times a week for 6 months cause noticeable liver damage? Is a lft necessary if I'm having liver pain?
A lab reported my ANA test result -ve, cut off rate: 1.117, sample rate: 0.198. They used immulite 2000 rai analyzer. Is it standard, reliable report?
It's just a lab: As a pathologist, I'm well-acquainted with the pitfalls of all ANA testing. The real decision is whether to treat your joint pain as lupus or one of its ana-positive variants. Many healthy folks have some ANA on board. The value that's returned from the lab is only one piece of the puzzle in working up rheumatologic disease. ...Read more

I'm 25 5'10 and currently 155 I am not overweight by doctors standards but I am on the road to be if I can turn it around now. Can ADHD meds help lose?

What is standard work-up for a child reporting frequent abdominal pain around stomach, esp w/running, after constipation & food reactions r ruled out?
No standard workup.: Work up of this type of pain can only be determined after a detailed history and physical exam and a review of any other tests which have already been done. It is possible that the child may need a trial of medications or dietary changes. It is also possible that procedures may be necessary. I would follow up with his primary care doctor, and consider a referral to a pediatric GI doc if necessary. ...Read more

Beta blocker: In my opinion there is no indication for your taking beta blockers according to your profile unless you require them for cardiac rhythm abnormalities or significant hypertension. Preventative measures would include daily low dose aspirin, avoidance of tobacco, taking omega 3 fish oil, regular exercise providing a treadmill stress test is normal, and maintaining a healthy BMI. How is an endoscopy ultrasound (of the pancreas) any different, if at all, than a standard screening endoscopy of the stomach area? Same machine?
Why aren't oral/rectal tests of gonorrhea not included in standard std test? Don't they have complications like genital gonorrhea?
You ask/they do: The common screen for gonorrhea is done on a urine specimen. If you have concerns that you may have been exposed to oral or anal gonorrhea it is important for you to speak up. Physicians do not necessarily assume you practice oro-genital or rectal sex. Good practices require good shared communication, which is a 2 way process. ...Read more

Does a Positive ANA Antibodies, IFA test mean I could have an STD? What STDs are Positive ANA test? Is an ANA Antibody test a standard test for STDs?
Antinuclear antibody testing is useful for someone with signs and symptoms of an autoimmune disease - anemia, arthritis, kidney disease, inflammation of the heart and lungs. It is not a test for STDs.
However, a test for syphilis, the VDRL, was once used as a test for autoimmune disease!
