Right before i wake up, my fingers are stiff and painful. As the day goes on, the pain and stiffness goes away. Possible causes?

Three possibilities: It could be either rheumatoid or osteo arthritis. If the stiffness decreases in the first hour, think more osteo, if it takes a few hours, may be rheumatoid. Discuss with your physician. The third possibility, while a little less likely, is carpal tunnel syndrome. This often can first present after sleeping (flexed wrists) and as stiffness and pain in the morning. Less likely, but possible. ...Read more

Need a consultation: This pain can be originating from the spine or surrounding areas such as the kidneys. Given the severe nature of the pain, a consultation and likely an mr imaging examination would be needed. Information from this exam along with the clinical info would help determine where the pain is originating from and whether it is mechanical, neurologic or solid organ based. I advise seeing a pain specialis. ...Read more

Neuropathy: seems like a nerve is being pressed upon which then sends out "messages" to u. This called neuropathic pain-the burning. The nerve may not necessarily be compressed at the knee, but can be at the hip or back. Ur primary care doc can start a work up and do a physical exam to see where it may be originating from, and refer u to a specialist if need be. ...Read more

Edema: This is likely due to veins in your right leg that are not working well. Veins have valves in then that prevent blood from flowing backwards and our muscles push the blood forward towards our heart. When the valves don't work we get edema in that leg. You must get diagnostic testing such as an x-ray to rule out fracture or mri/us to rule out ankle sprain/strain. A thorough physical exam must be done as well. I would wear an ankle brace before seeing your local foot doc. ...Read more
