Armpit Temperature Infant
What qualifies as a fever when taking an infant's temperature under his arm? I've heard a variety of answers and am a little confused.
Me too.: In infants I prefer rectal temp.102.0 qualifies as a "temperature" this way. It is slightly higher than oral. I do not have great faith in the skin strips. ...Read more
Transient vs long tm: The forces that occur in the moments of a delivery can place traction on nerves that come out of the neck & supply the arm. It is relatively common for arm to be limp for a while due to swelling around the nerves. Onset may be immediate or later after swelling occurs, most swelling subsides in a day or two & function returns. Some kids need therapy to recover, rare cases can be permanent. ...Read more
I have a mole on my arm that my 3 yo has rubbed/picked at since he was an infant. It has changed to a lighter color & scabbed. Should I be concerned?
Probably: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without examining you and even that may not be helpful. You may need to have the lesion removed and the tissue sent to a pathologist for examination. It would be prudent to consult your doctor. ...Read more
Thorough eval: This kind of fracture at this age requires a thorough evaluation. A history of the event if known that preceded detection of the injury. An evaluation of the setting wherein it occurred & a minimum set of x-rays over the all the long bones & ribs for other fractures. The orthopedist is a player in this event, but no more important than the team that covers the other issues. ...Read more

About temperatures: 97's, 98's, and 99's are normal temperatures in normal babies. That means those temperatures don't tell you if a baby is normal or not normal. Parents and doctors have to use other signs and symptoms, or the lack thereof, to decide if a baby is normal or not. Look to see if there are other signs. ...Read more

Fever *by itself*...: ...Is never an emergency. Fever plus very cranky, severe cough, much vomiting, out of it, short of breath, not drinking, etc - now that is an emergency, but that would still be an emergency even if fever wasn't there. Exception: any fever is an emergency in a baby under 2 months of age, or in a severely immunosuppressed person such as one on chemotherapy. ...Read more
37.3°C temperature under armpit on 2 months old baby a day after vaccines. Gave Tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain 4 times already. Wearing light clothes. What to do?
Under arm temperature of 38 but rectal temperature of 37.4. Baby was asleep before taking the temperature. What's more reliable? Shots yesterday 2m
Rectal temps: Rectal temperatures are the most closely associated with true body temperature, followed by oral then axillary (under the arm). Tympanic membrane (ear) and forehead thermometers are unreliable in the pediatric population. ...Read more
Condition not temp: Kids febrile response to illness is more a gauge of how well their body rejects the germs than how serious the illness. I've had kids with 105 giggling & running down the hallway while some with 100.4 couldn't move without pain. Any kid with sustained t >102 for >12hrs deserves a dr visit. I am more concerned about taking fluids, wet diapers & play. A 7yo with 107 last yr with flu did quite well. ...Read more

CDC recommends mix infant formula with water at temperature at least 158F. I am wondering whether there is a maximum temperature? Will temperature like 185F break down any nutrition or create bad chemicals?
I never would: I don't know where you got your info but don't believe the CDC would suggest this and would NEVER do it. Baby formula should be placed in bottles cleaned as you would common dishes/utensils preferably using hot water but it is not necessary to sterilize them. It can then be mixed at room temperature using hygienic methods. I agree that high temps would break down the nutrients. ...Read more

Not very: I am not convinced infants actually develop fever when teething. They have so many minor viral illnesses between 6m-3y in the same time frame that there is sure to be overlap. See a doctor:
Fever usually means that the body is raising the temperature to stop viral or bacterial attacks. An infant retains the mother's antibodies for about 3 months. The infant's immature immune system takes over so the baby becomes more vulnerable. If the baby's temperature is very high or very low, it may be very serious

Take a breath:
For most healthy children, I consider 101 to be a fever. For tiny or sick babies it's different. Take a breath and immediately take a good look at your son. Is he breathing usually/comfortably? Is he drinking fluids and having wet diapers?
