Strained elbow at work. Forearm swelled. Now swollen above elbow on the back of my arm. Swelling happened hours later. Is this normal?

No: Any atypical swelling is not normal but a reaction secondary to a traumatic event. A lot depends on how you injured it. Perhaps, but get chk: When pregnant, a certain amount of swelling is expected, as your body water increases (to support the baby & amniotic fluid). It: It sounds like you suffered a "blown" vein from the iv. A vein could have possibly been nicked an eventually became "blown out" over time, which could result in your symptoms. Also consider a possible reaction from the tape that was used to keep the IV in place. It is unlikely a reaction from the levaquin, (levofloxacin) you would have had a more diffuse reaction (not localized to just one arm).
Hopefully you are better by now, if not see your doctor.
Take care. ...Read more

Lymphedema: The arm swelling you are describing occurs secondary to disruption of the lymphatic circulation draining the arm, either via lymph node removal and/or radiation therapy. When we used to remove 10-20 lymph nodes, the lifetime incidence was ~25%. Nowadays, with sentinel lymph node biopsy alone, the risk is closer to 5%. Hopefully, in the future we won't have to remove any lymph nodes. ...Read more

I know that some women have arm swelling and pain after breast cancer surgery. Why does it happen?

Pain happens after: Most surgical procedures. In mastectomy, a nerve that exits the side of the breast is usually injured or sacrificed and irritation of is causes pain or noxious tingling especially when the arms swing during walking.
