Are there any steps I can take to prevent mild cluster headache from getting worse?

Are there any steps I can take to prevent mild cluster headache from getting worse?

Medication: You might want to try Motrin for a mild cluster headache(200-600 mg) per dose. I have had success in previous patients with Imitrex (sumatriptan) or other migraine specific agents. Prevention is key. Avoid alcohol and smoking. If you wake up with cluster headaches, sleep apnea may be a cause. Consider having a sleep study done to screen for this. ...Read more

May be risky: Taking Fluoxetine, a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, along with a triptan, a serotonin receptor agonist, increases the risk of serotonin syndrome. The syndrome consists of mental status changes, autonomic dysfunction, and neuromuscular abnormalities. Taking Fluoxetine with Verapamil, or Verapamil with Rizatriptan does not pose problematic interactions. Discuss concerns with doctor. Hope this helps. ...Read more

Sumatriptan injections for cluster headaches, does that interact with Zofran (ondansetron)? & does sumatriptan also have the ability to prevent nausea and vomiting?

Sumatriptan injections for cluster headaches, does that interact with Zofran (ondansetron)? & does sumatriptan also have the ability to prevent nausea and vomiting?

No interaction: Wanted to clarify your questions as I seriously doubt you have cluster headaches, which occur in middle aged men, and is a very specific syndrome. Secondly, you would do far better taking a preventative agent to obviate the need for injections which have risk of stroke or heart attack, especially if you smoke or take BCP's. Consider riboflavin, butterbur, Co-Q10. ...Read more
