Gastro recommended CT and colonscopy for mild abdominal pain/gas. 23 yrs old. If CT scan shows nothing, is colonoscopy necessary? No bloody stools

Options available: CT scan of the abdomen may be indicated but not for mild pain alone. If the symptoms are progressive and there is concern for Cancer (unlikely in your age group), then only I would consider doing a CT. Similarly Colonoscopy is not indicated because of pain alone. If there is bowel irregularity or blood in stool Colonoscopy is reasonable to do. In your case I would watch /monitor for 4-6 weeks, then ...Read more

Probably Hemorrhoid: Cancer is very unlikely. If you have a history of constipation, you may have developed a hemorrhoid. Generally, people will notice a speck (or sometimes more) of bright red blood on the toilet paper after a hard bowel movement. If there is blood in the stool (red or black/tarry which is older blood) or a substantial amount of blood, you should see a doctor to rule out other causes. ...Read more

Blood in stool past 2 weeks, no pain, does seem to have anal fissure that is healing but still some blood streaks should I be about cancer?

Cancer not common: Blood per rectum is abnormal. Seems that you have explained it with the fissure. If you continue to be constipated, you shouldn't ever have to force out a bm, the fissure won't heal. Still advise you see GI doc for full colonoscopy. As often as 1 out of 3 times the full endoscopy wll find an additional problem. Usually polyps, but rarely (at your age) a cancer. ...Read more

How quickly do colorectal cancers progress once symptoms like blood in stool show? No symps just always have high anxiety about getting cancer.

Surveillance: The fact that you are worried -- whether or not the actual risk is worth it -- is a reason itself to begin getting occasional colonoscopies. If there's a family history, all the more reasons. In the absence of the non-polyposis colon cancer family syndromes, colon cancers are usually preceeded by benign polyps removable for cure. 28 yrs old, male. Do narrow stools always indicate colon cancer or are there other reasons? No blood in stool. Bloating and gas.

No – but what's up?: And narrowed caliber of stool can be commonly associated with colon carcinoma in any age group. It relates to the relative constriction of the rectum prior to evacuation. Other conditions include rectal stenosis, a sizable rectal polyp, or other conditions serving to narrow and constricted the normal sized stool. Positive for blood in stool. Dr. Won't do colonoscopy because I'm not a candidate for surgery. (have stage 3b lung cancer & severe copd) any suggesti?

Possibly repeat test: Occult testing often leads to false positives. Abnormal test results may occur after eating meat, a nosebleed or gum bleed. It does not necessarily indicate internal bleeding. With stage iiib lung cancer and severe copd, I suspect your doctor believes there is really no benefit to further testing due to these very severe illnesses that will probably limit lifespan. ...Read more

Been having thin/narrow stools. Clear rectal exam by gp/no blood in stool. Should I fear colon cancer? I'm 39 &had adenocarcinoma insitu of cervix 4yrago

Possible lesion: In situ adeno unrelated unless some for of radiation employed that could narrow distal bowel. Narrowing of stool suggests that there is some constriction of bowel causing a narrowing of the lumen and thus the stool. Blood does not have to be present but relying on a gp rectal not satisfactory. Sigmoidoscopy at a minimum and colonoscopy more accepted for this problem. ...Read more
