Are There Effective Alternative Therapies For Child With Low Thyroid
I have all symptoms of hypothyroidism, but blood tests are normal. plus a swollen thyroid left side. What can cause this? Hair is really falling out.
Other possibilities.: The Thyroid is not the only endocrine gland that affects metabolism, mood, menstrual cycles and hair follicle activity in women your age. It's quite possible that you are experiencing peri-menopause, or that you have Vitamin D deficiency. Has the enlargement of the thyroid gland been confirmed/examined with ultrasound? If not it should be. Your other hormones and a D level should be checked also. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

How likely is lithium to affect the thyroid, causing hypothyroidism? Especially when there were s/s of hypothyroidism prior to lithium therapy?
T3 (liothyronine) and T4: t3 (liothyronine) thyroid is active thyroid. T4 thyroid converts to t3 (liothyronine). T3 (liothyronine) gets metabolized fast. High t3 (liothyronine) will suppress tsh. TSH stimulates the thyroid to make t4 and t3 (liothyronine). For some people armour thyroid is good. For some it has a little too much t3 (liothyronine). There is medicine that is all t3 (liothyronine) and all t4. I like armour thyroid. T4 is popular. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

What's best treatment for autoimmune thyroid disease and how is the treatment different than typical hypothyroidism?
Most often none: Most often the autoimmune process is not treated. We treat hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism as those are the important consequences of the process. Treating the process itself with immune suppression is theoretically possible, but not done as such treatments can have serious consequences and in thyroid disease do not offer advantages. The only exception is graves' disease with ocular complication. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Thyroid mass: Is it cystic or solid? Are thyroid function tests normal or abnormal? They will better answer whether thyroid is under-/over-active. Consult with fp or gyn concerning the mass. I had a partial hysterectomy 3 1/2 weeks ago. I have hypothyroidism also and take a really low does of synthroid (thyroxine). Can my thyroid change?
Im taking synthroid (thyroxine) for hypothyroidism and also taking a liquid iodine supplement. Is this ok? what is more effective? will my thyroid get better?
Get Iodine Level: There are still areas in Brazil with iodine deficiency. If you are iodine deficient and have an enlarging thyroid (goiter) and an underactive thyroid the iodine will likely be helpful and your Synthroid (thyroxine) dose may go down (do not take them at the same time). If you are not iodine deficient depending on the thyroid problem, iodine may actually worsen thyroid function. Get your iodine level checked. ...Read more

Need follow-up: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, there is inconsistency in your results. Both TSH and T4 being low does not add up. You may need to repeat the lab tests, not necessarily the scan, in about 6 months to see what direction these results are going in. ...Read more
