Unknown: Fortunately this problem usually resolves on its own. It is not known why it occurs but there seems to be a relationship with a prior viral illness. As to why there is not more research... It is not contagious, and will eventually clear on it's own without any treatment. That being said, if itching is present, an oral antihistamine in combination with a topical Hydrocortisone (1 or 2.5%) may be beneficial.
