Pregnancy (Definition)

When your due date arrives, you will be more than ready to have your baby! Most women deliver the baby somewhere between 37 and 42 weeks. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, only 5% of babies arrive on the exact due date. Could I get shingles from my husband? He has had shingles before and now I'm pregnant

Could I get shingles from my husband? He has had shingles before and now I'm pregnant

Not likely: Be certain to discuss with your obstetrician. Your highest risk is if your husband is experiencing a current outbreak of shingles (varicella zoster) and you have no prior history of chicken pox. If he is not actively experiencing any clinical symptoms of dermatomal pain, vesicles and / or rash, your risk is low.

B4 I get pregnant I want to get as much as possible. How do I purposely get the shingles?

B4 I get pregnant I want to get as much as possible. How do I purposely get the shingles?

You cannot: Before you are pregnant you should be tested to see if you have immunity to rubella (german measles), varicella (chicken pox, and also causes shingles) and be immunized for these diseases to reduce the risk of contracting them while pregnant, if non-immune. You should also be immunized against pertussis (whooping cough) as well.

I have shingles. Is it ok to be around a pregnant person? My neice is having a baby shower tomorrow.

Yes: Remember that shingles is the chicken pox virus. She's either been vaccinated in childhood and is immune or had chicken pox and is already exposed. Not to worry.

What do you suggest if my husband has had shingles before and now I'm pregnant could I get shingles from him?

What do you suggest if my husband has had shingles before and now I'm pregnant could I get shingles from him?

More Info: It is remotely possible to contract Chicken Pox from the oozing fluid from the shingles outbreaks on the skin, particularly if you are not immune or have lost of your immunity. The problem in that case is that a Chicken Pox (Varicella) infection during pregnancy can be transmitted to the fetus possibly resulting in a fetal injury. If exposed treatment is Varicella Igg Immune Globulin within 3 days

Can shingles during pregnancy be harmful to the baby?

Can shingles during pregnancy be harmful to the baby?

Doubt any effect: Shingles is essentially the emergence of a hibernating virus from nerve clusters along the inside of your spine. It travels out the nerve, like a canoe paddling down river to the skin, where pt causes pain & blisters that contain the reactivated virus. To affect baby it would need to enter the blood & pass thru the placenta. This is not a feature of shingles.

What is a safe way to treat shingles during pregnancy?

Valtrex (valacyclovir) for 7 days: Shingles is when dormant chickenpox virus reactivates and causes painful blisters on limited areas of your skin. It will often appear with pregnancy and other immunocompromised states. Shingles is not dangerous to your unborn baby. The best treatment is oral valtrex (valacyclovir) for seven days. Valtrex is a prescription drug and is felt to be safe to take in pregnancy.

Is there a connection between having shingles while pregnant & it causing autism in the baby?

No: There are no approved or documented studies, publications that prove any relationship between shingles during gestation and autism. The prevalence of autism is about 1-2/1000 people worldwide and the (cdc) report 20 per 1, 000 children in the United States are diagnosed with autism as of 2012 (up from 11 per 1000 in 2008).

I recently had shingles. What can I take during my pregnancy to minimize the transmission of the virus to my baby?

I recently had shingles. What can I take during my pregnancy to minimize the transmission of the virus to my baby?

Not necessary: Shingles are a skin eruption caused by the chicken pox virus that you likely contracted in childhood. The virus is present in the nerve root supplying the skin area where the eruption occurs. With normal immunity you will also have circulating antibody to the virus that will be protective for the neonate. If you have a suppressed immune system, you should consult your doctor.

I had never had hives before. They have lasted four days, and there is a possibility I have become pregnant. Shingles?

I had never had hives before. They have lasted four days, and there is a possibility I have become pregnant. Shingles?

Hives: They have multiple causes, most of them are mysterious. It may be you had a slight viral infection, sometimes hormonal changes can also trigger them, but usually they are benign. Shingles leave a long last painful rash, it is different.

See your OB: It is unlikely that you are getting shingle again, however, it is not feasible to know what you have without examining you. Please consult your obstetrician ASAP.

Herpes zoster: Shingles, caused by the varicella-zoster virus that causes chickenpox. The virus is with you the rest of your life. The vaccine is given under the skin and recommended for children under 13 and for everyone 13 or older who has never had chickenpox. 2 doses are recommended. The first dose is administered at 12 to 15 months and a second dose at 4-6 yrs, if your child has had these it should be fine.
