Are Raisins High In Iron
Lots of reasons: Many acute infections raise iron-binding proteins in the blood briefly. Popping a few iron pills can do it. Hemochromatosis, anemia of chronic disease and a few others often do it as well. Remember reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthies fall outside at either end. Always look at the big picture when considering labs.
Different things: "iron" is often misused as a term for "hemoglobin", sometimes even by allied health professionals who should know better. The "serum iron" actually measures how much of the element are actually available free for use. You may be low on red cells because the iron isn't usable, or the red cells are being lost or destroyed or can't be made for some reason. The situation is common.
May be, may be not: Further evaluation is obviously needed. I can't say whether it is related or not without getting more information. In many cases- probably those two are not related. However in a case of colon cancer with metastatic disease to the liver- it can cause both increase of bilirubin level as well as low iron. Go to see your md and discuss further your condition.
Yes, but...: It depends on why you are having too much iron...You should find out the underlying disease...If it is very mild, may not need to do anything. Stop all supplements if u r taking. Donate blood regularly will lower your iron level, if you need so--in such disease as hemochromatosis etc. Young and healthy male may have higher iron than average, females have a bit less due to monthly loss..See 2 more doctor answers
Hi my iron ends up regularly high (184) but ferritin levels are always normal (40). Should I worry?
My iron levels are worrying. How can I raise my ferritin levels without causing the iron to go too high?
Don't Rx a lab value: And especially, don't try to be your own physician based on things you've read on the internet. If you have a low serum ferritin, you're probably iron deficient and your first and foremost concern is why -- i.e., do you have stomach / colon cancer? Ulcer? Hookworm? Many 'healthy' / veg diets are iron deficient. Treating iron deficiency won't make you sick from 'too high iron'.
My iron level is 24 can I increase it with iron tablets and loads of high iron foods in a month of time?
YES: But to raise the iron in the RED BLOOD CELLS and make more red cells if you are "anemic" requires a high BINDING CAPACITY for IRON and enough FERRITIN to CARRY the iron to the cells! Its a PART of the story and dietary intake will increase the ironlevel as long as its being absorbed! Hope this info is useful! Dr Z
My serum iron is high at 178 (40-150) and TIBC is high normal at 439 (261-478). Sometimes both are high. What causes this?
When your iron is too high, what does it affect? And when drs refer to flush your blood, what does that mean and how's it done?
I would like to know what the high iron can do yo me though. It id not heridtary, I always had low iron before. I am not on any medications?
Recheck labs: It is very difficult for a person to have high iron if he does not take iron-containing supplements and doesn't have a hereditary or genetic disorder where his body holds onto iron inside the liver. People with that disorder get liver damage. One can recheck the tests, which is not just the iron level, but also ferritin, transferrin, and transferrin saturation. A doctor can discuss the results.
Excess total: Body iron occurs in a disease called hemachromatosis. Other causes include heavy rbc transfusion in the past. Obviously the specifics of your situation and the reason the test was ordered in the first place would be of help here.
