Cancer (Definition)

Cancer can begin anywhere in the body and is usually related to one or more genetic mutations that allow normal cells to become malignant by interfering with internal cellular control mechanisms, such as programmed cell death or by preventing ...Read more

Living with clear cell ovarian cancer 3 years but PET scan shows activity in right breast retroareolar region. Ultrasound showed nothing 4m ago?

Living with clear cell ovarian cancer 3 years but PET scan shows activity in right breast retroareolar region. Ultrasound showed nothing 4m ago?

Recommend further ev: If there is sufficient update in the PET scan(SUV of >2.5), I would advise you to have another breat imaging study done. You have a choice to have mammography, repeat Ultrasound test or repeat PET scan once again, if the last PET scan was done >3 months earlier. Good luck. ...Read more

How easily can a CT scan detect ovarian cancer?

Detects mass: Imaging, either by ultrasound, ct or MRI detects a mass in the ovary and cts are good at that, but not the only modality. Current imaging techniques are good at suggesting ovarian cancer. Actual diagnosis of the nature of the mass requires examination of the tissue by a pathologist. ...Read more

Can you trust the diagnosis of ovarian cancer that is detected through a CT scan and ultrsound?

Can you trust the diagnosis of ovarian cancer that is detected through a CT scan and ultrsound?

Not very reliable: Ultrasound, ct, tumor marker evaluation, history, and physical exam have not been shown to be effective in adequately screening for this disease (even when used all together). This is a disease we don't really have a handle on right now. This doesn't mean patients who have pelvic pain or risk factors shouldn't be evaluated, but the tools available have not been shown to increase life expectancy. ...Read more

I have 2 cystic ovarian masses, on CT scan. Could this mean ovarian cancer. I'm nervous. 29 years old?

Almost never!!: It is very common to see cysts on the ovaries. Ovaries make cysts every month that contain eggs. These come and go all the time. These are usually small, under 3cm each. But you should follow up with your gynecologist who can check with an ultrasound. Ct scan is a very poor way to look at the ovaries and pelvic ultrasound will tell you much more. Most likely, they will go away on their own. ...Read more

To detect ovarian cancer, abnormality of cells or cysts or any other growth what is better MRI or ct-scan?

Neither: Unfortunately there are no good screening tests for ovarian cancer. Now in someone with known cancer MRI and ct can be helpful to determine the potential extent of cancer, but neither is effective as a screening test. ...Read more

Pet Scan (Definition)

Pet scans most often use a radioactive form of glucose, the energy source for most of the cells in our bodies. The pet scanner can detect and measure how much of the radioactive glucose analog, f-18 fdg, is in a particular organ or region. The areas using more glucose are hyper metabolic and generally more worrisome. Our brains and sometimes hearts prefer glucose as food, making ...Read more
