How can I avoid getting kidney stones or gallstones on a VLCD? Why causes these to occur? Is it the weight loss itself that causes this?

Stones and VLCD: Kidney stones should not occur on a VLCD if you drink plenty of liquids, and assuming you do not have an abnormality in calcium metabolism. Gallstones are different. Less food= less bile = sludge and small stones, which can occasionally cause colic. The risk is small, but ursodiol can prevent this. Talk to your doc. Gallstones are common; you may have before you start the diet. ...Read more

Unrelated: Almost 23% of the general population have asymptomatic gallbladder stones. Symptomatic cholelithiasis is associated with pain after eating in the epigastric/ right upper abdominal area in a person with gallstones on ultrasound. Your symptoms most likely are not related.
