I was diagnosed with Staph. 3 days ago. Since then my older boils have grown quite large, and new ones all over fever is 99.5. Are the meds working?
Check with doctor: This depends on size of the boils, where on your body, and maybe on the exact antibiotic you are taking. Boils can progress for a day or two after starting effective treatment, but 3 days is getting a bit too long and many staph strains are resistant to commonly used antibiotics. Recheck with the doctor treating you. It's the weekend, but if your doc isn't available, probably someone is on call. ...Read more
Can my cat/kitten catch boils (either normal staph causing boils or serious bacteria like MRSA) from me or vice versa?
Cat to human most li: Cats, especially those with claws, have been known to transmit bacteria to their human masters. Bacteria like MRSA are everywhere. Generally, humans don't transmit to cats because cats are "clean" compared to humans & we don't scratch our pets, generally. Aside from MRSA, cat-scratch disease (Bartonella bacteria), Pasturella, & other bacterial trasmission has been reported in medical journals. TTYD ...Read more

Is rubbing alcohol enough to kill staph after dressing a boil? (i usually wash briefly also to remove the smell, but want to make sure this is enough)
Peroxide is better: Alcohol is very toxic to skin, especially damaged skin. Hydrogen peroxide works well to kill any residual germs while causing less tissue damage. An antibiotic ointment may help as well (triple antibiotic ointments are available as generics equivalent to neosporin). Many experts believe thorough washing with good old soap and water (not briefly!) is as good or better than abx ointments. ...Read more
Already infected.: A boil IS an infection. You may already have staph (whether it is MRSA or regular staph) which could have caused it. There are other causes. Staph is present on everyone's skin. You can get MRSA from others if you don't have it now. You could have a non-MRSA staph causing your boil, and if it is open or draining can catch MRSA if you do not keep it covered and clean & safe from more germs. ...Read more

Colonization: You may have staph colonization of the nose or other areas. See a physician to culture the lesions and start an oral antibiotic and topical bactroban (mupirocin) ointment. These boils can occur from friction and sweating as well, so wear loose clothing during exercise and shower immediately afterwards with hibiclens or dial. Use bactroban (mupirocin) one week each month on nostrils and fingernails. See a dermatologist. ...Read more

Can I be sure I don't have staph? Had boil on inner buttocks lanced&sent to lab to test for staph. It came back negative. I have reoccurring boils. Why?
Negative?: Context may be missing- 1) you may not have mrsa, but you may still have "staph", 2) not all boils are caused by staph, but others can also be involved such as fecal bacteria that grows in the absence of oxygen (anaerobes). 3) if you were on antibiotics against staph when the boil is lanced, a negative culture can occur.
