Plant vs fish omegas: The type of omega 3 fatty acids (including dha) in plants are shorter in fatty acid chain length than the ones in fish. Our bodies use then longer chains much more efficiently, perhaps 6-10 times more efficiently. ...Read more
My HDL is 24, trig 97, total 135 i'm a 38yo male in "good health" BP 110/60ish.
Are there any long term risks in taking 6g fish oil @60%=4g of omega3?
What for?: Why do you feel the need to take so much fish oil? First of all, you are better off getting your fish oil directly from fish like wild alakan salmon or sardines. Second, high concentrations of fish oil can cause anti coagulation that can make you susceptible to bleeding. Good health will not come from a pill. ...Read more

I have high cholesterol (genetic, i'm healthy 25yr old), should I be careful of my egg consumption? I'm vegetarian & enjoy the source of protein
I would not worry: Vegetarianism is a moral choice and I'm glad you are allowing yourself eggs -- this is important in keeping you healthy. If your hypercholesterolemia is familial (as mine is), you'll probably be on meds by the time it matters, and in the meantime I'd rather you simply stay fit than try a dietary modificaiton that will probably not matter much and make your life less easy & enjoyable. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
I take a multivitamin plus vitamin c, d, all b's with niacin and fish oil, calcium, red yeast rice, should I take the vitamin magnesium with these & why?
I don't like it.: Truth be told, I don't like combining Niacin with the red yeast rice as they can both have toxic effects upon the liver. I hope you're having your liver blood enzyme levels monitored on that combination. Adding Magnesium to all of this is not my concern as I don't see any issue in that as long as your doses of all these other medications are not excessive. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Can calcium that comes from plant sources have any adverse reactions like clogging arteries? I wanna take RAW CALCIUM from garden of life product
No: it is a wise idea for most women to supplement calcium and vitamin D. Exercise is very important for bone preservation also. Although it is important to supplement your calcium, the particular calcium supplement that you were asking about appears to be very expensive compared to others with no obvious proven benefit over them though. Calcium supplements do not clog your arteries. Good luck. ...Read more

I take a multivitamin,12.5mg of atenolol, and omega 3 fish oil. I'm out of balance all day long. Not like vertigo just out of balance. Any idea why?
Off balance: You probably are suffering from BPPV (benign positional postural vertigo). This will usually occur with changes in position or even turning around in your bed it will last 30 sec then stop. It is made better by focusing on an object on the wall or an object fixed in space . You should see the local ent in the area and they can perform the maneuver to get rid of the problem. Good luck ! ...Read more

Cholesterol total/cholesterol-HDL ratio: 3.6.1 good? Ok? Bad?
Numbers are numbers: Lab results usually are numbers, and numbers are just numbers, with little meaning unless a doctor takes in the whole picture of what's going on. The ordering doctor may or may not consider the results a problem, depending on the patient's illnesses, bodily condition, life habits, and exercise activities. It's better to have HDL at 50 or higher. TG in the 130's is ok, but 120's might be better. ...Read more

I don't eat any kind of sea food (fish, ...)what should I take to compense my body' needs like omega 3 or vitamins ? And is that necessary for brain ?
Omega 3 fats: Omega 3 fats are essential for humans because we cannot make them -- they must come from our diets or supplements. They are highly concentrated in brain, and needed for its optimal function . You can take fish oil supplements -- at least 1-2 grams/day of epa and 500mg/day of dha (major omega 3 components in fish oil). There are also plant-based forms. http://tinyurl.com/ne78c3l. ...Read more
Can I do a test for omega 3 in my body , i mean in blood test. And how much wants the fish oil to compense my needs if i don't eat any sea food ?
Doc wants me to take three 300mg of krill oil daily after my omega 3 test came back. I had been taking 1 krill plus a fish oil daily. Is this unusual?
EPA ; DHA: Fish oil and krill oil have 2 major components: epa and dha. Generally people need at least 1-2 grams of epa, and at least 500 mg dha daily. The preparations you were using may not have delivered this much of each component in the capsules you were taking, so you needed more. Please know that if you eat wild alaskan salmon, sardines, etc at least twice each week, you may not need supplements. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Is it okay to take Seven Seas Once a day Cod Liver Oil with omega 3 in addition to a multivitamin?
Omega 3: According to the fda, it is safe to take up to 3, 000mg of omega 3 (dpa and epa) per day. It’s not the same as 3, 000mg of fish oil. A 1, 000mg fish oil usually contains about 300-400mg of omega 3 (dpa and epa). One capsule of prescription omega 3 Lovaza 1, 000mg contains the total of 840mg of omega 3 (465mg of epa and 375mg of dha). The daily dose for Lovaza is 4 caps/day or 3, 360mg of omega 3/day. ...Read more
None: Omega 3 fish oil is the same as snake oil, both are high in omega 3 fatty acids which are extremely fragile. Omega 3 fish/snake oils reduce triglycerides by impairing your liver's ablility to make them. However the oxidative stress caused by fish/snake oil actually raises your LDL cholesterol. Some day we may use the phrase "this is just more fish oil" or "here comes the fish oil salesman". ...Read more
I'm trying to get information regarding Omega 12. The answers that I get are all related to Omega 3. Is there a distinction?
Yes, there is a: difference between Omega 3,6, and 9. I'm not familiar w/Omega 12. Omega 3 is EPA or DHA. People needing more help w/brain development or recovery take more DHA than EPA. Omega 6 is common in most diets, and we make Omega 9 ourselves in the body. If you buy Omega oil, there is no need to buy the 3, 6, 9 variety. Omega 3 is most useful, Omega 3 & 6 is ok, but I don't believe you need 9. Peace ...Read more
Not ideal: It is far healthier to consume omega-3s from a natural source such as wild salmon than from fish oil or synthetic forms. The question is why are you taking this supplement in the first place? To reduce cholesterol? Anti-inflammatory? Anti-coagulant? Brain health? Whatever the reason, wild pacific salmon is still preferable. Don't buy into the hype that the pills are nearly as beneficial. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
