Can arava (leflunomide) be prescribed for lupus? What is the best medication for sle lupus when liver and kidneys are affected? Thank you very much.
Methotrexate cheaper: Generic Methotrexate is very inexpensive. If you get name brand pills it's more, but generic version of Arava (leflunomide) is more expensive than Methotrexate and Arava is the most expensive. In my experience, Methotrexate works better and has less frequent dosing (weekly instead of daily). I only use Leflunomide (arava) if Methotrexate can't be used for some reason. Side effects are similar. ...Read more
Seems ok: These are known treatments for rheumatoid arthritis. They are not typically the first agents that I use and i like to try to get my patients off all steroids if i can, but I do have patients on Leflunomide (arava) if they can't take or fail Methotrexate or biologicals. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Common combination: In rheumatoid arthritis Prednisone is given with a variety of other medication during therapy. We try to taper people off Prednisone because of its long term risks and side effects. Each medication has side effects including some of these: risk of infection, bone loss, osteoporosis, cataracts, weight gain with Prednisone and blood count and liver test with (leflunomide) generic name of arava. ...Read more
It may be...: Again, this is a question for the treating specialist, most likely a rheumatologist. When treating a disorder like ra, there are a variety of medications that have been effective; as with everything else in medicine, no one size fits all, and the right drug or combo for each must be assessed over time by a specialist. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Why do I need to stop methotrexate & arava (leflunomide) before alif surgery? I can't take it for 2 months after, why?
What are my chances of getting liver disease while taking arava (leflunomide) and methotrexate together?
See details: Studies of this combination have shown increased risk of liver disease over taking just one of these meds alone. The exact risk is open to debate. I personally never prescribe this combination of meds although other rheumatologists do. ...Read more
On enbrel 50mg weekly for 3 mos, methotrexate 25mg weekly 3mos, arava (leflunomide) 20mg 1 month, still have psoriasis lesions. Is this possible&willl psor. Ever clear?
Still a bit early: So many of these medications requires several weeks or months to start working. Enbrel and Arava usually works around 3 months after starting it, and Methotrexate can take as long as 6 months before working. I would give it another month, then reconsider. There are other good medicines that could work for you including stelara (ustekinumab). ...Read more
Hello doctor i suffer from rhumatoid .I am on emthexate2.5 (8pills once a week) and arava leflunomide (a pill every two days ) my liver aches.Thank u?
Severe liver injury: Including fatal liver failure, has been reported in some patients treated with arava (leflunomide). Patients with pre-existing acute or chronic liver disease, or those with serum alanine aminotransferase (alt) > 2xuln before initiating treatment, should not be treated with arava (leflunomide). Use caution when Arava (leflunomide) is given with other potentially hepatotoxic drugs. Also emthexate2.5 have liver sisde effects but as much. ...Read more

Prednisone x 2 yrs and Arava x 4 mos for suspected PMR. Now with hypogammaglobulinemia and albuminuria. Could medicines be the cause?
Doubtful: PMR usually responds beautifully to prednisone therapy. I doubt that either arava or prednisone are the cause of albuminuria or hypogammaglobulinemia. Perhaps an evaluation by a nephrologist is in order but your rheumatologist can better advise you on this matter. Your pharmacist may be able to obtain more information about whether arava can produce kidney damage. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
