Will zoom whitening help whiten a tooth that has darkened after a root canal? I know the take-home trays don't, but since this stuff is stronger and uses a light to really get it working, i was hoping it might work? I'm worried about whitening my other te

You : You asked a very good question. And there are a few different ways to answer your question. Many times a tooth requires root canal therapy due to large filling which damage the nerve. Teeth that have had root canal therapy become brittle, and if they have large restorations, it is better to put a crown (cap) on the tooth to help protect it. The color of the porcelain would match your own teeth, so appearance would not be a problem. If, however, the nerve was damaged due to trauma, but the tooth structure is sound and there is no need for a crown, a different approach can be tried. The dark color is coming from the inside, not from the outside. Your dentist can try to bleach the tooth from the inside with a liquid agent called superoxol. This may lighten the color to your satisfaction. The solution will be changed a few times over the course of a few weeks. It's worth a try. Ask your dentist what he/she would advise is best for this particular tooth. ...Read more

Is erosion of enamal at root from the teeth whitening trays/strips possible?

Not enough evidence: If you happen to be experiencing sensitivity at the gumline after using your trays/strips, it is possible that the gel is causing that. However, it is not likely that gel is causing any recession. You may also be noticing it more, since the dentin where the enamel stops will not whiten as enamel does and you will see the difference at the gumline more so with the enamel becoming lighter. ...Read more

Depends: The biggest factor regarding tooth whitening is the actual tooth. Some teeth are more resistent than others. For those teeth that prove to be super resistent, alternative procedures should be explored. Options would be bonding or veneering. ...Read more

Teeth whitening at a dentist's office may take 1 hour in 1 visit but, in place of it, home bleaching trays (via DDS) takes longer but lasts longer?

Types of whitening: Both "last" the same time. In office bleaching is more for patients who want an immediate effect and don't want to bother with wearing the trays for days to weeks. However, the cost is more reasonable with the take home trays and you keep the trays to reuse in the future, and then only need to spend a small amount on fresh bleaching gel. My patients love the cost, ease and results with the trays. ...Read more
