Implantation (Definition)

One common meaning refers to the process by which an embryo attaches to the uterus of a woman so that she is pregnant. Many think of it as 'sticking.' implantation in humans always occurs when the embryo is between 6-7 days old. Is hCG produced at time of fertilization (when sperm meets egg) or only when implantation occurs?

Is hCG produced at time of fertilization (when sperm meets egg) or only when implantation occurs?

Before implantation: Hcg is secreted by the embryo after fertilization but before implantation. The embryo reaches the blastocyst stage before it implants, with an inner cells that becomes the fetus, and trophoblast cells that make HCG and become part of the placenta. A little HCG is produced before implantation, but by the time we can *detect* HCG with a blood or urine pregnancy test implantation has already occurred. ...Read more

What is the embryo doing from time of fertilization to implantation?

What is the embryo doing from time of fertilization to implantation?

Floating & growing.: The embryo floats down the fallopian tube and enters the uterus where it will implant itself in the uterine wall and establish a blood supply to the mother for further nourisment to continue its development. While floating through the fallopian tube, it has enough nourishment inherent in the egg to divide and grow. ...Read more

Can implantation of a blastocyst occur a day or so after an abortion?

Unlikely: While anything is possible, the transfer of a blastocyst to the uterine cavity the day or two softer an abortion would very likely not result in implantation and pregnancy success. ...Read more

How soon after implantation does the blastocyst start to recieve from the mother?

Wait: Hcg is not detectable reliably until around 10-12 days after ovulation, so wait a bit longer. There's craziness all over the internet about detecting HCG early, it's wrong. ...Read more

Can pcos affect the stage of implantation of the fertilized ovum, after the fertilization of ovum implantation can not occur because of pcos factors?

Clarify?: Polycystic ovary syndrome has certain effects on the ability to conceive, but I don't believe that extends to altering the stage of implantation of the fertilized ovum. You really should discuss questions like this to a reproductive endocrinologist, I think that would help in your understanding of the physiology and effects of PCOS ...Read more

How many days after fertilization does the fertilized egg become a blastocyst? Then embryo? What implants-the blastocyst or embryo?

The process: As the fertilized egg divides, it is first known as a morula. Approximately 5 days from first fertilization it forms into a hollow ball known as a blastocyst. This blastocyst implants and begins to sort itself out into different layers--the inner group becomes the embryo and the outer layer will work to nourish and protect. At approximately 6-7 weeks from time of fertilization, an embryo begins. ...Read more

Sorry, a follow up question to the previous. Will the morning after pill prevent fertilization/implantation in the egg knowing that they are ovulating?

Sorry, a follow up question to the previous. Will the morning after pill prevent fertilization/implantation in the egg knowing that they are ovulating?

No: The morning-after pill works by delaying ovulation. Sperm hang around for several days but no pregnancy will occur if ovulation is delayed until the sperm are all gone.
If an egg is already there, the morning after pill doesn't prevent fertilization or implantation. The good news is that the egg is viable for a short time, not days and days. Best wishes! ...Read more
