Yes it can

The two often go together. The baby will have apnea-defined as 20 seconds or more of not breathing, which then in a neonate (baby <=28 days) will often lead to bradycardia, or low heart rate. Please have your baby seen by your pediatrician if this is going on, as prematurity is not the only cause of these symptoms. Sometimes medication is needed.

Usually not needed

Preterm infants with apnea usually outgrow this condition prior to discharge from the hospital. If they do go home on a monitor it is usually for parental, not medical, indications in which case the duration of monitoring is quite variable. Most infants discharged on home on apnea monitors are taken off by 6 months of age.

Sleep apnea

Interesting Fact

On a sleep study, more than 5 episodes of apnea per hour is considered significant enough for CPAP.

No

Apnea of prematurity is primarily caused by an immature respiratory center in the brain, and not an anatomic obstruction, so removing tissue like tonsils or adenoids is not indicated. True apnea of prematurity will resolve over time without any treatment.

Yes

As your premi's status improves and feeding is started, your expressed breast milk can be used for early gastric tube feeding. Sometimes they will mix this with material to increase the protein & calorie content. When some of the breathing support is removed and baby shows a good latch & swallow, you can feed in the unit. You can work with your OB & lactation consultant to boost your supply if low

Depends

Gestational age is usually determined by a combination of calculations based on the last menstrual period, physical examination of the pregnant woman, and fetal ultrasound. There are tests that can be done just before birth to see if the baby's lungs are mature, and after the baby is born a physical examination and scoring system help to determine the degree of prematurity.

It depends

The most important question is how premature. A baby born 4 months early is vastly different than one born 4 weeks early. Generally all premature infants need to be checked for infection, have their breathing checked and be given proper nutrition to grow and develop

Breastpump

Mothers of very premature babies usually start out using a breastpump, and freezing the breastmilk. Then, when the baby is doing well enough to start eating, breastmilk can be given by a tube placed in the baby's stomach through his/her mouth. When a baby is big enough and strong enough, s/he can start learning to nurse on the mother's breast.
