Are there any medications or supplements that can open blocked arteries in the heart?

Are there any medications or supplements that can open blocked arteries in the heart?

Not exactly: Blockages in coronary arteries are made of cholesterol plaques. Blood thinners like Aspirin and fish oil can prevent clots from forming on plaques and causing attack. Statins may stabilize plaque and slow growth. Nitrates can keep the arteries from squeezing, relieving angina. Niacin and exercise can raise good cholesterol and sweep out the bad. Only "cure" is stent and/or bypass surgery. ...Read more

Myonecrosis: Heart attack is the death of the heart muscles. If there is severe low oxygen from any cause the heart fails and the tissues die. The only experience i know of heart attack per se in young people without known atherosclerosis is when they use drugs like meth and we presume that is due to the vessel vasoconstriction and impeding of blood flow. ...Read more

Why is it that 100% blocked arteries are not reopened if the heart attack is more than 48 hours old?

Why is it that 100% blocked arteries are not reopened if the heart attack is more than 48 hours old?

Usually not helpful: It is possible to save some heart muscle supplied by a totally occluded artery if the artery is opened soon after the onset of occlusion. The longer one waits to reestablish blood flow, the more muscle tissue irreversibly damaged. Only in instances of persistent partial flow via collateral blood vessels could one expect benefit from opening a total occlusion beyond 48 hrs after infarction. ...Read more

Can heart massage therapy help open blocked arteries?

Can heart massage therapy help open blocked arteries?

No, sorry...: The best approach to blocked arteries is prevention & picking your parents carefully. Failing that, aggressive lifestyle changes and judicious use of appropriate medications to achieve targets based on compelling objective clinical trials data are your next best option. If significantly blocked arteries remain, then angioplasty ± stents, or bypass surgery. Massage rx will not open blockages. ...Read more

My dad has 2-3 blocked arteries 90% and 1 100% had minor strokes and heart attacks having forced surgery on fri, he has not been good what r the risks?

CABG risk: It is not clear from your description what type of surgery he is getting. I surmise that you mean coronary bypass surgery. Overall risks for patients like him in the STS database for patients who have had strokes or TIA and previous MI is > 96% survival. That is very very good for major procedures like this. Discuss with the heart surgeon for better guidance and risk stratification. ...Read more
