Any medicine that makes a person less troubled by anxiety is "anxiolytic" ("lysis" is literally a loosening). The term is traditionally used for medicines but perhaps insight / behavioral treatments for anxiety or intervening in a crazy life situation (one of a physician's most helpful procedures) can be considered anxiolytic.

Effect, not power!: What you seek is effectiveness - not power. And that is not a one-answer-for-all query. It's also not always best managed in the long run by pharma. CBT psychotherapy is safe and teaches skills to avois, reduce ans manage anxiety (etc) for life. Often meds are used to get thru rough patches, but living more wisely is what matters. Dose dependent: Thorazine (chlorpromazine) wouldn't usually be my first choice for treating anxiety, though its use for that makes sense to me if used in low doses, since it dose have anxiolytic properties and is non-addicting. At low doses of thorazine, akathisia (restlessness) is less common than with Haldol (haloperidol) and several other medicines that tend to cause akathisia. ...Read more
