How conclusive is HIV RNA test at 23 day mark? Have to wait with anxiety till I get test again. ARS at 6 weeks freaking me out. Thanks in adv
Nearly 100%: Welcome to HealthTap. You can relax. Virtually all persons with HIV have positive RNA or DNA tests by 23 days. You don't need to wait 6 wk for final testing. Ask your doctor or clinic about a DUO or "4th generation" test, for which the result is conclusive 4 weeks or more after exposure. I might have more advice if you'd like to say more about your exposure and any symptoms you may have. ...Read more

Be tested!: It's pretty clear that you need to be tested. Also, you need to prevent exposure - safe sex is the only kind of sex that makes sense for so many reasons. While being tested, ask your questions and learn how to take care of yourself. Life will be less anxiety provoking when you do. ...Read more

In the 20% of those who don't know they have hiv, is it because they don't get symptoms of early hiv/ars or because they don't associate them with hiv?
HIV is Hard To Get: Hiv infection occurs from exposure to blood or bodily fluids through drug use that requires the sharing of needles or through sexual behavior. There are a couple of other rare or uncommon ways to get hiv. Hiv infection can be prevented in many cases. This prevention process has to be started within 72 hours of exposure. Most people who get infected with HIV do not have any symptoms early on. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Yes, theoretically: Yes, it is theoretically possible that someone could get acute retroviral syndrome upon reinfection with another strain of HIV. First of all, reinfection is very, very rare but not impossible. However, reinfection with a second strain (perhaps more powerful than the original strain) theoretically could cause an acute retroviral syndrome as it is a completely new infection altogether. ...Read more

No: ARS symptoms typically start 10-20 days after acquiring HIV. To my knowledge it never takes as long as 6 wk. And don't I recall your username, previously assured that your negative tests show you weren't infected? HIV test results always overrule exposure history and symptoms. Apologies if I'm wrong. Do HIV ars start day x symp1, day x+1 symp2..Or all at once ? Does it cause only one lymp node in one arm and then other arm + other symp? Pls help!
Not HIV: Friend, this isn't how HIV presents. If you've been exposed recently, and it causes symptoms (and it may not), it will seem to be a really bad case of "the flu". It's not subtle. If you are concerned that you may have met HIV, get tested. You won't be able to relax until you've done so. Be brave. But one node here, one node there, come-and-go is normal life. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Oral thrush 14th day after possible HIV exposure. Is it ARS symptom? P24 Combo on13th day; index value 0.1& nonreactive. No other symptoms. How reliable?

I am just wondering when do you get ars after hiv infection had oral sex on March 13 went down on a guy and got sick with a cold June 12 am I ok ?
Rare and too late: HIV is very rarely transmitted by oral sex, and unlikely your partner had HIV if not bi or IV drug user. ARS always shows up within 14 days, so your symptoms are too late. ARS can cause sore throat, but usually not other cold symptoms like congestion or cough. All sexually active people need HIV testing from time to time, so maybe do it now when on your mind. But not because of this event. ...Read more
I am just wondering when do you get ars after hiv infection had oral sex on March 13 went down on a guy and got sick with a cold June 12 am I at risk?
Get tested.: You are at risk and should get tested. Get an HIV nucleic acid test. If the result is negative, repeat it in 6 months, if negative then, it will rule out HIV infections. God forbid you turn out to have infection, proper treatment, started early can keep the infection in check. ...Read more
HIV 1&2 P24 combo 13th day.index value 0.1&non-reactive. Oral Candiasis(tongue) on14th day.Is this ARS ?No other symptoms so far.How reliable is test?
Very reassuring: I think this is a duplicate question, same answers. Oral candida is not likely (not the same as white coated tongue). But even if candida, it is too soon for it to be from an HIV infection caught only 2 weeks previously, and is never the only sign of ARS. Your test is about 90% conclusive that you don't have HIV. Have another combo test at 4 weeks to be certain, but in meantime really no worries. ...Read more
