Many things; yes: Genetics, trauma, environmental factors/stress/illness can cause anxiety/depression.
Some people have generaized anxiety/depression without apparent causes.
If you are suffering or know someone who is so from such illness, consult a doctor. There are many treatment options available today...Medications and/or therapy.

Generalised anxiety disorder. Condition mild but flares up once drugs are stopped. Does it mean patient needs to be on medication for life?

Not necessarily...: Depending on the meds, the body may need more or less time to adjust to not having the meds anymore. Also, hopefully, underlying issues have been worked through in therapy and alternative ways of handling anxiety and life (eg relaxation, deep breathing, eft) learned. Klonopin, (clonazepam) bad?: A medication is neither "bad" nor "good". All medications have risks and benefits. Some benefits of Clonazepam include that it is long acting for a benzo, & that it is often effective in treating anxiety.
