The real reason is probably there is less cultural stigma and more effective assessments and treatments available. Unclear: I'm not sure what's meant by "loss of being able to connect with reality, " but it's certainly possible to be psychotic when depressed. The psychiatrist treating you would check for such symptoms, and offer appropriate treatment -- which would often include antipsychotic medications.
