Is it normal for someone with health anxiety to notice symptoms of the diseases they believe they are suffering from?

Is it normal for someone with health anxiety to notice symptoms of the diseases they believe they are suffering from?

Yes: That is the curse of having health anxiety. Normal bodily sensations and abnormal bodily sensations all are perceived as signs of illness... making it very difficult for either the patient or the doctor to tell when the patient is actually sick (other than suffering the sickness of health anxiety). The patient must teach himself which of his pains, his cramps, his sniffles, etc., are normal. ...Read more

CBT: In contrast to other forms of psychotherapy, cognitive therapy is usually more focused on the present, more time-limited, and more problem-solving oriented. In addition, patients learn specific skills that they can use for the rest of their lives. These skills involve identifying distorted thinking, modifying beliefs, relating to others in different ways, and changing behaviors. ...Read more

Hello. : Hello. This is a great question. It doesn't sound "normal" but you certainly don't sound crazy either. Your description makes me wonder if your anxiety is some what out of control. It doesn't sound like a comfortable place to be. Have you considered talking to a therapist or possibly seeing a psychiatrist? There many types of treatments (with and without medications) that might really help improve your quality of life. Think about getting some help. Take care. ...Read more

Health anxiety - how can I know if a symptom is real or imagined? With my history I'd be seeing a doc 10x a year if i got examined every time.

Health anxiety can: be very unpleasant to live with. Talk w/your doc and see if you both can come up w/a plan as to how often you will visit, e.g., every 6 months. Follow that unless you have major symptoms which he/she can detail for you. See a clinical psychologist to be treated for this not uncommon phobia. Peace and good health. ...Read more

Im 24. How likely would be for me to have polymalgia rheumatica? I've all the symptoms, but I also have health anxiety so I don't know what to think.

Very unlikely: Polymyalgia rheumatica is a diseaae that affects people over 50+. IT is rare in young adults. I can't find an exact number. Your ethnicity plays a role too. It is more common in people of Scandinavian/European descent, and least common in Asians Something else is more likely to be causing your symptoms and you should see your doc about it. Ever since my mom passed i've had severe health anxiety thinking I have every disease out there with any symptom. It's ruining my happiness/depressing?

It sounds like you: have gotten stuck in health worries. Have you adequately grieved your mother's death? If no, consider working with a spiritual advisor or a therapist to work through this more. If you believe you have already been able to grieve & deal with her death - then consider cognitive behavioral therapy - to counter your irrational fears. Take care. ...Read more

Im a 16 y/o male & i have alot of health anxiety about cancer.i am really healthy and fit. I was wondering what are some of the most common symptoms r?

Different types: So many cancers - they don't share symptoms except for very generally if at all. A basic full exam w/ blood work and other basic labs would raise flags for deeper work - if there's no flag - you can relax. This is especially true for young healthy folk. Unexpected weight loss and internal bleeding, lumps or moles that are unusual, sore throat, etc. that lasts long w/ dry coughing may alert you. ...Read more

I have a pea sized, firm lump inside my earlobe on my right ear, easily movable, no pain or symptoms, has remained and not changed in 5 months roughly. I have moderate health anxiety and I am just curious if it’s something worth the concern?

I have a pea sized, firm lump inside my earlobe on my right ear, easily movable, no pain or symptoms, has remained and not changed in 5 months roughly. I have moderate health anxiety and I am just curious if it’s something worth the concern?

See below : Most common cause of such benign lumps involving the ear lobe are either an epidermoid or a sebaceous cyst. Sometimes these will resolve with time or by applying moist heat for 15 minutes 2-3 times daily. If they persist or become bothersome, treatment options include needle injection of an anti-inflammatory medication vs incision and drainage vs surgical excision. If concerned, see an ENT MD. ...Read more

Cancer in 20s. How common? Symptoms to look out for? I always have health anxiety about this & i know a 25yr old w/ leukemia. :/ any stats? Thanks!

Uncommon for most: ..Cancers except maybe in patients with inherited traits. Some cancers are more common in younger folks, though. My advise: 1. Have a good talk with your doc about this, particularly regarding your family history. 2. Live a healthy life. Eat well, exercise, and avoid indulging in toxic habits. 3. Live your life without fear, stuff can happen to any of us, and being anxious will not prevent it. ...Read more
