Antiviral Medication For Shingles
I have shingles. What are the chances of my 3yr old and 17.5mth old getting it? 17.5mth old had 18mth shot today early. I'm on antiviral medication
Depends on situation: Shingles is a re-activation of the chickenpox virus that hibernates in your nerve roots after you had it or the shot. For unknown reasons, it reactivates and causes the localized rash/pain. The blisters do contain virus, which could give your kids chickenpox. If they were vaccinated, that is unlikely. Covering the sores and hand washing prevents spread of the virus. The kids would not get shingles. ...Read more
Shingles (Herpes Zoster) (Definition)

Is it possible for new shingles lesions to erupt after finishing a 7 day course of an antiviral drug? I have RA and diabetes and I am on methotrexate.
My 14 year old son has developed a shingles rash today. He has been to the doctor, but no antiviral drugs have been prescribed. Should we go back?
Yes: There is a medicine that helps treat shingles (more than one, actually), but it is only effective if started within the first few days of the rash. ...Read more
It varies by person: Each person responds differently. Shingles is caused by dormant chicken pox within nerves. It gets reactivated due to immune system stress, moves out to skin, causes rash/pain. Post-herpetic neuralgia (pain) may persist for months. Treatment: capsacin topical cream (never put on rash), low doses of anti-seizure/antidepressant medicines. Prevention: the zoster vaccine lowers risk of future outbreaks. ...Read more
I have shingles and am taking antiviral tablets. Just woke up and room was spinning. Is this linked?
Maybe linked: Probably not a drug side effect. You don't say where your singles rash is. If the face, and especially if near the ear, you may have Ramsey Hunt syndrome, a type of herpes zoster (or sometimes herpes simplex) that can affect the inner ear and the nerves that control balance. If so, you may need higher doses of the antiviral, and maybe a corticosteroid. Contact your doctor immediately. ...Read more
How long should I expect pain from shingles to last after finishing antivirals? I believe my rash was mild. How long should I wait to see my Dr?
Is it ok to continue penicillin antibiotics to finish course when starting antiviral medicine for shingles?
My shingles blisters are still here, after a month. I took antivirals-why won't they go away? What's wrong?
Skin damage: It is likely the infection has cleared with the anti-virals, but the damage to the skin can take months to heal. It's not unlike a burn - the skin has to regenerate and create new skin cells, and these areas can be extra sensitive for weeks to months. Think of it in terms of a broken bone - often takes 6-8 weeks to make that new bone after a fracture. Same for skin to heal. ...Read more
An elderly friend recently had shingles-he took antivirals fo13 days as prescribed but still has bad pain- what's a natural pain relief regimen?
Shingles pain: This is called post herpetic neuralgia. The older the patient when they get shingles, the more likely they will get post herpetic neuralgia. The pain can be persistent and chronic. Over the counter medscape usually don't work. Zostrix (capsaicin) cream is an over the counter treatment. Prescription pain medication may be necessary, or seeing a pain specialist might be needed. ...Read more

2.5 weeks into shingles. Antivirals for a week, prior to rash, rash improving still have pain, tramdol for a week but stopped 3days ago. Suggestions?
I was diagnosis w/ shingles 2 weeks ago. It has healed but last night it started itching again. Do I need to see dr for more antiviral prescription or I'm healing still?
Itch from shingles: Shingles is a reactivation of chickenpox. After chickenpox resolves, virus stays in nerve cells and comes out as shingles along the path of one nerve. Once vesicles dry, no need for antiviral meds. Nerve is inflamed for a while afterward, so itch/pain can persist for weeks-months. This doesn't need treatment as long as symptoms are improving. If itch/pain persist there are treatments for that. ...Read more

I started with shingles, on antiviral 10 days. 3x's I've been sick with head cold, flu, diarrhea while trying to get better from shingles. Help!
Get lots of rest: You are looking at this problem from the wrong point of view. The shingles is the consequence, not the cause of your problem. It is a recurrence of a dormant or sleeping chicken pox virus from way back when that gets activated when your immune system declines - too much stress, too little rest, or busy fighting another infection. You need to allow your body to recover in order to get rid of all. ...Read more

Shingles. Does rash always burst? Needle like pain, then rash. When broke out started antivirals. Mostly more like pimples than blisters. No fluid?
Shingles: The Rash:
The real answer to your question is that it can vary. It all depends on how effective the anti-virals are, how soon you got on them and this is tempered by how quickly or aggressive the rash is.
Shingles are very easy to diagnose, but many of my patients think they are something else until I see them and teach them about this painful exacerbation of the chicken pox virus in one's nerves. ...Read more
