My 1 year-old was diagnosed w chicken pox. Its been >1mth now n new rashes r growing. Y? Shudnt it resolve in 3 wks? Can antihistamine b given for itch?

I'm concerned.: There are three possibilities. (1) it's not chicken pox. (2) it's chicken pox but your child's immune system isn't working correctly due to a congenital immune defect. (3) it was chicken pox (aka varicella) but there is a secondary infection. The most severe of these are caused by the same streptococcus ("strep") that causes sore throats. Non itchy rash flare up 3 times in 24 hours despite antihistamines. Is there a chance that I m allergic to my cat? (9 months old). No prior symptoms.

Rash not cat allergy: If it doesn't itch it's not an allergic rash. The other possibility is that the antihistamines are strong enough to suppress itching but not the rash. Try stopping the antihistamine. If the rash continues to appear and becomes itchy, then yes, it could be the cat. You will want to see a health care professional at that point. ...Read more

Allergic reaction to laundry detergent. I have a terrible rash and can't sleep. I get severe akathisia from antihistamines. What else can I take?

Detergent reaction: You can try OTC topical hydrocortisone 1% cream. Akathesia, although very rare, may occur with first generation antihistamines as diphenhydramine (Benadryl), hopefully not the case with the newer less sedating as loratadine or desloratadine, as for your akathesia vs RLS, I believe you need to see an experienced neurologist for assessment, best wishes ...Read more

I have had a skin crawling sensation for a month. Dr prescribed two antihistamines. Neither worked. Blood work is fine. No rash, bumps or bites.?

Which bloodwork fine: There are several different tests that should be considered part of every workup for creepy crawly skin. In my opinion only a very few people with similar complaints get all the recommended tests the first time around. Then, patients will always say, "but all the blood is fine..." But that's assuming that all the relevant bloodwork was done. So, name the tests and we'll see. What's next? ...Read more

How fast would a rash subside when using: antibiotics, cortisone, antihistamines and topical creams at the same time? Any chance it would do nothing?

Rash: It all depends on the cause of the rash. If it is an allergic rash for something topical like soap for instance then topical cortisone cream would be a good option for itching and redness. Antihistamines would help redness and swelling for an allergy rash. Antibiotic ointment help for topical bacterial infections. If you are having shingles (herpes zoster) none of these will help. ...Read more

I have a rash, it was raised bumps but then once taking antihistamine it has gone down&comes up blotchy red patches and my fingers feel stiff/tingle.

Urticaria (hives): Red, raised itchy rash responsive to antihistamines sounds like hives. Acute hives usually resolve within a few days but can last weeks. Hives can become chronic if symptoms last over 6 weeks. Commonly, viral/bacterial infections can trigger an outbreak, however medications, foods, and insect stings can also cause acute hives but have the potential to lead to more serious complications. ...Read more

Dry skin: In the winter months, the first thing I consider would be dry skin. Try using unscented soap and apply a skin moisturizer all over within 3 minutes after bathing to see it this helps. It may take a few days for the skin to calm down. If problem persists, then need to consult a dermatologist or allergist. ...Read more
