Antidepressants That Cause Memory Loss
Perhaps some: Some (not all) antidepressants have what is called an 'anticholinergic effect' which at high doses in susceptible people may interfere with concentration and the formation or retrieval of memory. Remember, however, that sometimes the reason for taking the medication, usually depression, can cause similar problems. ...Read more
Can an antidepressant like Zoloft (sertraline) cause some memory loss? I've been taking it over a mo. (25mg) and notice I'm forgetful. Can it become permanent?
Memory loss rare but: Possible with zoloft, (sertraline) steroids, metrogel. More common in conditions treated by zoloft: anxiety, depression, menopause. Can antidepressants cause nerve damage or loss of sensation I the vagina? Which ones causes this?
Not nerve damage: Antidepressants do not cause nerve damage or loss of sensation in the vagina. However, ssri antidepressants can cause difficulty with sexual desire and also with ability to climax. Which antidepressant causes weight loss? I've been on many and last one was Effexor (venlafaxine) XR as others make me tired. I put on weight. Am depressed grieving
Depressed & grieving: Active grieving of a loss needs support more than medication. If the grief has become depression with poor self esteem, ongoing vegetative signs (changes in sleep, energy, appetite etc), & worthlessness etc antidepressants may help. Wellbutrin (bupropion) does not reliably cause weight loss, but it's less likely to cause weight gain than some others. Lexapro may be relatively weight neutral also. ...Read more
Can using antidepressant for a long-term (2+ years) lead to permanent damage such as increasing dependency or memory/concentration problems? Thanks!
None: Depression and being overweight go hand in hand but antidepressant is not the answer. Which of Feluoxetine or Citalopram has positive effects on memory alongside its antidepressant effects?
Neither: Neither Fluoxetine nor Citalopram actually improves memory. But depression can impact motivation, so that your attention to detail and your will to "try" decrease. This ends up affecting memory, if you're so depressed you don't even care about information that's coming in. By treating depression, these medications may allow your normal functioning to proceed. ...Read more

My dad (73) takes Zoloft (sertraline) and clonaepam. Should he be taking Donezepil? His memory started failing way after he started the antidepressant pill.
Question and Trust: You have every right to ask the providers to explain choices, but if you can't trust their expertise - find another provider. Anymore off-label uses abound - but if your Dad's condition is not Alzheimer's, donezepil is not the 1st choice. Other dementias and reason for memory loss exist. Have you seen Lumosity. Com? It might be good for him - or anyone. It's valid and fun and has a free membership ...Read more
Not the reason for: The prescription. The SSRI's are all fair at not increasing the likelihood of weight gain, but are not best for weight loss. Perhaps Wellbutrin, (bupropion) but I have a small sample size of patients as a measure for weight loss on an antidepressant. Bear in mind that depression itself often causes weight gain so getting help for your depression at all is likely to help with any weight loss goals you have. ...Read more
