What antibiotics are you referring to? They differ greatly in their potential effects on the developing fetus. Go and discuss this with an OB/GYN doctor and if you want to become pregnant - best of luck.

Should a non-pregnant woman who was diagnosed with Group B Strep take antibiotics? Based on research, I am reading that treating Group B Strep with Antibiotics could do more harm than good. What are holistic alternatives to antibiotic treatment?

Ignore it

Group B strep is a periodic visitor to the digestive tract and at any given time 30% of women may have it show up on a vaginal swab. Except for it's well known nasty habit of hurting newborns & occasionally causing urinary tract infections it can be just a benign hitchhiker in your system. Unless you have urinary symptoms or are in the final weeks of pregnancy, I would ignore the germ.

All antibiotics cross the placenta in varying amounts. Certain antibiotics are generally safe to take during pregnancy such as penicillins, cephalosporins and erythromycin. Others offer significant risk to the developing fetus such as tetracycline, sulfa drugs, quinine, voriconazole and others.

This really depends on how far into the pregnancy you are. Also, the site of the infection will also determine what antibiotics are appropriate in pregnancy. The earlier in the pregnancy has the greatest restriction for any medications.

Cipro in pregnancy

Ciprofloxin is categorized as Class C in pregnancy: There are animal studies that show adverse fetal effects but no controlled human studies. An expert review of published data on experiences with ciprofloxacin use during pregnancy concludes that therapeutic doses during pregnancy are unlikely to pose a substantial teratogenic risk, but cannot say there is no risk. See the FDA website.

Maybe

Cipro is a category C medicine in pregnancy. This means adverse fetal effects in animals but no controlled human studies OR no human/animal studies done... So, we usually use proven antibiotics with better studies or track record. Bottom line - take them if it's the only possible med that will work (I doubt it) or discuss it again with your Doc. It's always smart to double check your medications.
