If a chalazion is present for more than 3-4 weeks it is unlikely to respond to antibiotics. Combination topical agents such as maxitrol (dexamethasone neomycin and polymyxin) (which require a prescription) and include antibiotic/steriod components may be helpful during the first 3-4 weeks. warm compresses are also extremely helpful. Beyond 1month I tend to surgically remove them.
