Swelling from hit to shin from softball-should I continue to ice or switch to heat? If switch to heat, should I use heating pad or will icy hot work?

Treatment options: If your injury occured 72+ hours ago then it is acceptable to switch to heat in an effort to deal with any swelling in the area. Icyhot doesn't cause the same healing effect of ice or heat. Topicals such as this are known as counterirritants that trick pain receptors, but really do nothing more than numb the area.

If you are having severe pain, or are unable to walk on your leg please have a xray. ...Read more

Swelling (Definition)

Swelling is the enlargement of organs, skin, or other body parts. It is caused by a buildup of fluid in the tissues. The extra fluid can lead to a rapid increase in weight over a short period of time (days to weeks). Swelling can occur all over the body (generalized) or only in one part ...Read more

I tripped on stairs and my leg went in between the stairs hit the bottom my shin pretty good. Sever swelling and pain no bruising. What could it be?

A Bruise: Wait a few days, the bruise might be on a deep layer next to the bone, and it takes a while for the blood to make it to the surface to see. The blood might show up not where it was stuck but lower due to gravity effects and it might not bruise at all, swelling alone can occur after blunt trauma. ...Read more

Keep doing: What you are doing. It is not uncommon for a forceful contusion to make such a "dent" as you describe. Icing and elevation are the best things to do, for up to 48 or 72 hours. Then resume normal activities avoiding anything that seems to increase the swelling or pain (i.e. running, over-exertion). The dent may remain a surprisingly long time...even months to years: (Sorry. Take care of yourself ...Read more

I got my seatic nerve hit from a shot, was in the ER last night because of pain and swelling in my leg, shots didn't work and am still in pain.

Sciatic nerve injury: You mean a bullet injury of the nerve?, can you move the foot, or the leg? If the answer is yes, the nerve was not injured directly, but a pressure wave induced injury.
If you cannot move the foot, leg or feel at the same level the bullet injured the nerve with a direct impact.
In the first event, the pain will go away, you have an inflammatory response, which may last for a month or two. Be treated by a Dr. And undergo physiotherapy, for the second option you also will need a counselor. ...Read more

I was hit very hard by a line drive softball on the inside or my leg right above ankle. Since then there has been lots swelling and a hard knot there.

Softball Turned Hard: Yeah, that's an area of thin skin and the bone is near the surface. You probably have a bone bruise and maybe even a "subperiostial hematoma" which just means it hurts and will take a while to go away. The effect of gravity will also work against you so elevating it a few times a day will help. Topical ice may help, plus tylenol (acetaminophen) or motrin or both. If getting worse in any way, get it checked out ...Read more

Jumped off 15ft rock into ocean, hit ocean floor on one leg and crumbled. Pain behind the knee somewhat on the medial side. No significant swelling?

Varies: If you can bear weight on it, you may have just "sprained" it and should get better quickly. If either it is painful to put weight on it, or if if does not get better I would be seen. Somewhat concerning for sustaining a tear in the posterior horn if the medial meniscus which is fairly common and sometimes requires arthroscopic surgery. ...Read more

I have had a pain in both legs but mostly in my leg leg it hurts to touch it it hurts when anything hit it or touches it no swelling or tingling feet?

Neuropathy: Unless you have had this condition for a long time, the condition is probably not genetic. A neuropathy can occur without tingling, especially early in its course. Nerve conduction studies can confirm or exclude that possibility. Arterial disease can also cause similar symptoms but there would likely be pallor & coldness of the limb. Blood vessel ultrasound can document this is present. ...Read more

Went to kick at door but lower leg hit wall instead. Intense pain and swelling is it a bruise or fracture?

Either: Is a possibility. If you strike your lower leg hard and it swells certainly the blood can come from soft tissue trauma to the muscles, tendons or even a ruptured blood vessel. If it is fractured you would likely know it as you would most likely not be able to walk. It depends also where you injured it on your leg. You can have a chip or non-displaced fracture that bleeds as well. Ice, nsaids etc. ...Read more

I hit the top of foot by outside ankle 2 days ago. Very little swelling and bruising. Now aches from big toe up to back lower leg. Could I be broken?

Soft tissue trauma.: An x-ray can be used to identify most fractures for sure. So, removing all doubt would necessitate having an x-ray. My take is that you have managed to traumatize either a nerve or tendon passing through the area. Unfortunately an x-ray won't show these problems. An evaluation would help in isolating the source of your pain. Thank you for consulting Healthtap. ...Read more

People keep telling me this is pretty serious. I have just noticed swelling up my shins from long hours at pc. No prior problem so what would a doctor do for this?

I must admit I have: No idea what "long hours of pc" might be (personal computer?), but "swelling" may be edema, fluid accumulated. Push and hold for 30 - 60 seconds, it should leave a mark (pitting edema). This can be a sign of heart or kidney disease. The doctor would take a history, examine you, perhaps do blood, x-ray and urine tests to start, and an ekg. Go. ...Read more

Why is my ankle swelling all the way up the shin?

Why is my ankle swelling all the way up the shin?

Good question: I don't think this is a typical symptom. Hence, I would go to a doctor for an exam. It is possible you have a stress fracture. If there is pin point pain along the leg this is a possibility. This could be seen on x-ray though MRI is more sensitive. If it turns out you do have your vitamin d levels checked. This is one of a list of possibilites. ...Read more

Swelling on shin (just below the knees) with pain behind the shin. Is it something to do with my UC?

Swelling on shin (just below the knees) with pain behind the shin. Is it something to do with my UC?

Not likely.: It's unlikely that your symptoms are related to UC. Just below your knee is a bony bump called the "tibial tuberosity." This is where the tendon of one of the four parts of your quadriceps muscle attaches to the tibia or leg bone. Overworking the quads muscle can cause inflammation right there. Acetaminophen, ice and limiting walking, running & stairclimbing for a few days should help. ...Read more
