Evaluation needed: The uncomfortable grinding and especially the locking may be signs of cartilage damage within the knee joint. Suggest you seek evaluation by an orthopedic surgeon for diagnosis and possible treatment. It may just be wear and tear but with locking you may have a cartilage tear. If she is able to lie on her back with her feet fully extended as well as bring her feet to her face in a frog leg position, she should have normal spine and hip motion.
