7 mnths ago broke ankle 3 places. Surgery w/plate & 5 screws 4 fibula & 2 screws in ankle. Got dvt, major swelling when standing too long. Normal?
When healed.: Bone typically takes 6-8 weeks to heal, and if you had screws placed, you're likely waiting on bone to heal before you can become active again. Check with your surgeon: your healing rate can be determined with a set of x-rays. You don't want to push your body too fast! ...Read more
Should the rod be exposed after crushed ankle surgery? I had this surgery in feb 07 the rod and two screws were showing when the cast was removed. After about 8 weeks when the skin was almost covering the rod, the dr. Out of the blue took the two screws th
It: It sounds infected. With a crush injury often the blood supply to the area in question is damaged. It is not usual for an implant that is supposed to be under healed soft tissue to be exposed. There are different reasons why the screws were so easy to come out: little bone for the threads to bite on, poor bone stock, screws too short, perhaps you bore weight on the anke prior to when recommended. The numbness could be from the crush injury, from poor blood supply or from other causes of swelling like having your leg in a down position. ...Read more
Post ankle surgery bimalleous fracture with two screws one side, plate and screws other side. Done 10/21/14. PT daily home. Skin tight both sides. Why?
Sounds like you have: Swelling in that area. Without knowing more about whether you have pain at your ankle or pain at your calf or other issues going on - and I can't see or examine your ankle - it's not clear if this swelling related to impaired venous/lymphatic drainage which can happened after surgery in that area, or if it's related to intrinsic joint issues or even a blood clot. Have your doc check it out. ...Read more

Ankle surgery soon and I been having my foot fall asleep a couple times a day. I'm gettint the screws out and scar tissue scraped. This the cause?
It could be: Any time you have foreign material (screws) and scarring, there is risk of soft tissue irritation--nerves are very sensitive to this. Scarring and hardware can lead to nerve entrapment. Once the surgeon removes the screws and debrides the scar tissue, there is a good chance the numbness and pain will improve; however, sometimes nerves are damaged in surgery and you could always have numbness. ...Read more

Had ankle surgery 8 weeks ago. Have been full weight bearing for past week. Feel like can't have normal gait, like I have to limp. Normal?
Yes. You had 2-: -injuries 2 Ur ankle. The initial trauma & the secondary injury is the surgery. @ 8 weeks you may have healed Ur fracture, but the limp will remain with U until the muscles R rehabbed fully. This will cause Ur limp 2 decrease as strength increase ...Read more
How can you treat pain from a surgery you had 12 years ago that resulted in two screws in both wrists, the kneecap and an ankle growth plate?
See you doctor: First of all, if you are 40 and had surgery 12 years ago the growth plate in your ankle was long closed. My recommendation would be to see an orthopedic doctor and see why and where the pain is coming from. Obviously after 12 years the original surgeries are healed. The screws can be causing issues, you may have a meniscus tear, and or traumatic arthritis. That's why you need to get evaluated ASAP ...Read more
