A few thoughts...: Could be arthritis as some people have start-up stiffness that diminishes after they get going. Also if there is swelling that is a component this may decrease with activity and allow greater range of motion. Could also be tendinopathy/paratenonitis. Rest & see foot doc: Ankle pain after changing activity can be due to tendonitis or shin splints. It's hard to say for sure, because we need to know how long you've had it, how long you've been running, etc. Did you orthotics or are you asking if you should?
