Possible Problem: No. A stiff sore ankle is a sign of inflammation. This could be the result of an injury or of repeated microtrauma. You it needs to be treated with some rest, possibly nsaid's, and then a gradual return to exercise. Strengthen....: Strengthening your hips, knees, and ankles will often make it easier to run without pain. The best thing to do is see your doctor who may refer you to a physical therapist. One can also get exercises off the internet. Be sure to have well fitting shoes, proper arch support, and exercise on a flat, stable surface. If overweight, one should lose some weight... Junk: Mabe the cause of your pain, likely referring to synovitis and osteochondral defects. Try nsaids and possible steroid injection into ankle or cleaned out with scope. ...Read more

Pop sounds Bad.: Feeling a pop in a calf, especially under the circumstances you have given, is certainly concerning. I would recommend that you see a specialist for a evaluation of your calf. A few thoughts...: Could be arthritis as some people have start-up stiffness that diminishes after they get going. Also if there is swelling that is a component this may decrease with activity and allow greater range of motion. Could also be tendinopathy/paratenonitis.
