Physician evaluation: When you a have a sprain, ligaments have been partially torn and the surrounding muscles remain weak and unbalanced, leading to continued ankle instability. Other reasons for continued pain and swelling include an undetected fracture, bone bruising or tendon tearing. Consider seeing a doctor for an x-ray and exam. Numbness is often from minor injury or swelling to the surrounding nerves. ...Read more

You: You absolutely should get it x-rayed to make sure you don't have a stress fracture.

That being said, your choice of the words "on fire" and "numb" make me suspect a nerve injury. Tarsal tunnel syndrome is a possibility, but this usually comes on gradually, not right after trauma. You may have a nerve impingement, or something called neuropraxia, which is when a nerve gets stretched suddenly, which you might have done when you fell.

Your first order of business is to get whatever is causing your pain diagnosed. You can either go to a podiatrist or an orthopedic surgeon, have an x-ray, and see about the condition of the nerves in your foot & ankle.

Good luck! ...Read more

11weeks after an ankle sprain been going to pt and for the past 2 weeks I've been having numbness in my foot I feel it the most when laying down. What is the possible cause?

11weeks after an ankle sprain been going to pt and for the past 2 weeks I've been having numbness in my foot I feel it the most when laying down. What is the possible cause?

Scarring on nerve: The fact that there is numbness described leads me to believe that there is nerve compressed. After 11 weeks from an ankle sprain, pain should have subsided unless as part of the healing ligament, scar tissue formed and adhesions may have developed and are now compressing the adjacent nerve. Get your ankle examined properly. An mri/ct would probably be best to examine the soft tissue. ...Read more

Persistant pins and needles with numbness on top of foot three weeks after severe ankle sprain. Nothing helps, ankle feels fine. Treatments? Relief?

Persistant pins and needles with numbness on top of foot three weeks after severe ankle sprain. Nothing helps, ankle feels fine. Treatments? Relief?

Tell your doctor...: After 3 weeks from an ankle sprain, symptoms should have subsided if you've been properly examined and treated. If scar tissue formed in the area, you may be getting compression on an adjacent nerve. Get your ankle examined properly. An mri/ct would probably be best to examine the soft tissue. Your doc will probably rule out structural and vascular problems too. Get checked. ...Read more

Ankle sprain: Normal healing of a sprained ankle takes several weeks (on average). If its a chronically sprained ankle with constant pain and instability, it will take longer than a "normal" sprain. Yes, a sprain can get worse. Usually 3-4 weeks of rest, icing, antiinflammatory meds (like advil (ibuprofen) or motrin), bracing or compressing wraps, with or without physical therapy should be normal. Hope that helps! ...Read more

6 days post ankle sprain, my foot ankle and bottom of leg go numb. Especially if I stand on it for a whilst. No fracture or torn ligaments only sprain?

6 days post ankle sprain, my foot ankle and bottom of leg go numb. Especially if I stand on it for a whilst. No fracture or torn ligaments only sprain?

Ankle Sprain: An ankle sprain is really a misnomer in that there are typically ligaments torn (partially or fully) around the ankle. The tearing from those ligaments may cause swelling (mild to severe) and the swelling may impinge on the surrounding skin nerves. This may be causing the numbness, especially when standing because fluid naturally builds up lower with gravity. Hope this helps, good luck! ...Read more

Is it normal to have pain in a band on top of foot just below toes and numbness, swelling in two little toes after sprained ankle?

Is it normal to have pain in a band on top of foot just below toes and numbness, swelling in two little toes after sprained ankle?

YES: Depending upon the severity of the sprain, swelling can extend to the foot. My question to you-without seeing a doctor, how can you be sure it's "just a sprain." Most ankle sprains, I think, are undertreated resulting in lingering problems. ...Read more

Numb toes: With an injury to the ankle of that magnitude, it can irritate the nerves around these ligamentous structures and capsule. The numbness in the toes should resolve, but this could take weeks to months until this completely resolves. ...Read more

I sprained my ankle 6 months ago. There's still discoloration on both sides, sore, and now numbness in my foot and toes.?

Not only a sprain: A sprained ankle is a very vague term for an ankle injury. A sprained ankle can have numerous pathologies. A simple sprain is a slight stretching of a ligament around the ankle joint that should resolve in a few days to a couple of weeks. This was obviously more than that. An ankle sprain can consist of torn ligaments or tendons, broken bones, dislocations, capsule tears, loose bodies, and more. ...Read more

What do you advise if I sprained my ankle about 2 weeks ago and the foot is feeling numb?

What do you advise if I sprained my ankle about 2 weeks ago and the foot is feeling numb?

See a Clinician: After straining an ankle, desensitization can occur. Once the swelling decreases, feeling starts to improve. If you have complete numbness that is not improving daily, you need to be clinically seen in person to determine if there has been nerve entrapment with severe ankle sprains. ...Read more

Consider CRPS: Dear Amanda,
Your symptoms are not typical of normal sprain healing. Pain out of proportion with color and sensation changes in the limb could represent complex regional pain syndrome or reflex sympathetic dystrophy. These conditions respond well to early treatment. Best Wishes. ...Read more

Ankle injury: With ankle injuries, bones are only one level of concern. We also have to worry about the ligaments which are most commonly injured during an ankle sprain and will not show up on plain film x-rays. I would recommend that you immobilize the limb as much as possible and consult with your closest podiatrist. An MRI of the best in order to rule out soft tissue injuries. Good luck! ...Read more
